RIP: Our hopes for new iPods are dead

When Apple sent out invitations for their event last night, we were honestly hoping for a long awaited refresh of a product line – maybe the Apple TV or the legendary iPods – as the invite spelled out “It’s been way too long”. As it turns out, we got nothing.

The last generation of iPods were announced way back in 2012 – the 5th generation iPod Touch and the 7th generation iPod Nano. Ever since, the iPod Touch got little changes with a 16GB version popping out without a rear camera, then a year later, it got the camera. On top of all that, it is still compatible with iOS 8 despite the outdated hardware. If Apple announced a new iPod Touch this year, we’re guessing it should have had Touch ID and a larger display, but we figured that wouldn’t be a very good decision as it would give people little reason to get their new iPhones.

As for the iPod Nano, we’ve seen a lot of changes in its design language, and one that sticks to mind is the 6th version that looks like a watch. With an Apple Watch coming very soon, it would be difficult for the company to market two small products; they do not serve the same purpose, but we guess might cause a lot of confusion.

During Apple’s iPad event, the quote below was found highlighted in the premises.

“I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”

Steve Jobs

Besides, the iPod’s sales are slowly declining in favor of new product categories from Apple, and with all of that said, I think it’s safe to say that we won’t be seeing a new iPod anymore; the road ahead looks like it’s paved for cars, wearables, TVs and home control.
