Smart vs Globe: Samsung Galaxy 4 Postpaid offering

Now that two giant telcos in the country has announced the availability of the Samsung Galaxy S4, we thought of giving you a better look at Smart and Globe’s postpaid offerings to help you decide if ever you’re interested in getting one.

Smart has pretty much kept the same pricing scheme that they have when they first offered the iPhone 5. The difference between the 16GB iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S4 in all of the available postpaid plans is just less than Php100. Here’s look at Smart’s Samsung Galaxy S4 Postpaid offering:

Now let’s look Globe’s which has gone a bit creative with their proposition than Smart. Apart from offering the flagship handset on different postpaid plans, Globe has also added different lock-in periods which make it easier for potential customers to choose the duration of their subscription. Here’s a look at Globe’s SGS4 deals:

To give you a better comparison of the two telcos’ offerings, we picked three almost-identically-priced postpaid plans and placed them side-by-side to see which has the more affordable offer. Here’s what we got:

smart globe comparison

As we’ve mentioned on our “Ultimate iPhone 5 Postpaid Shopping Guide”, choosing the right postpaid plans for you really depends on your needs as a user.

“Smart offers generous free minutes and free SMS for a number of their plans where the total value is often times higher than the MSF itself. This helps you maximize your use of their network.

On the other hand, Globe offers consumable amounts as a percentage of the MSF. They also offer some freebies depending on the plan (more attractive as the plan goes up).

If you already know your average monthly consumption with call minutes and SMS, Smart’s plan will give you more mileage.

If you are unsure about your usage pattern, Globe’s consumable gives you that flexibility to reallocate credits to other services.”

From what we’ve gathered so far, it seems that Globe’s got the better of Smart in terms of its SGS4 pricing. But not only is Globe’s offers are more affordable, we also liked the introduction of various lock-in periods which we think a lot of subscribers will like. How about you guys? What do you of Globe and Smart’s Samsung Galaxy S4 postpaid plans offer?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 now official

With the Galaxy Note line stealing the limelight from Samsung’s own tablet line, we were quite unsure of what happened with the Galaxy Tabs. Looks like Samsung still has plans for it as they have officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

SGT3

The Galaxy Tab 3 will be launching in a 7-inch form factor just like the very first Galaxy Tab. Samsung only announced one iteration of the Galaxy Tab 3 (no 10.1, 7.7 or 8.9 versions), but since we have no assurances that they won’t launch more, we won’t close on the possibility that there might be various iterations of it in the future.

The Tab 3 will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 8/16GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD), a set of cameras and Android 4.1 Jellybean. The WiFi-only version will launch in May, while the 3G variant will come in June.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 specs:
7-inch WSVGA (1024×600, 169ppi) TFT display
1.2GHz dual-core CPU
1GB RAM
8/16GB storage
micro SD up to 64GB
3MP rear camera
1.3MP front-facing camera
3G HSPA?21 / 5.76
WiFi a/b/g/n, WiFi Channel Bonding, WiFi Direct
A-GPS + GLONASS
Li-ion 4,000mAh battery
Android 4.1 Jellybean
188 x 111.1 x 9.9 mm
306g

Seeing that it runs on a minimum of 8GB memory, a 600 x 1024 display and a 3MP camera that is lower than the 5MP ones on the Note-tablet line, we can probably expect it to be priced affordably like the previous generation of Galaxy Tabs. Will you bite if this comes near the Php15k mark? Share your thoughts below.

How to make popsicles : perfect for summer!

Where I am now in Manila: I feel like am in a giant oven with this heat! I’ve made a mental note to be in Alaska or the Himalayas at this same time next year. Suddenly, am craving for the chilling cold instead of seemingly being burned alive in the sun when I go out these days. I really wish Summer 2013 isn’t this cruel to the skin, eyes & everything else :(

One great tip for coping: hydrate! hydrate! Drink tons of water if you can, or take refuge in something cool like ice cream….. and popsicles! Am glad Tess of The Maya Kitchen sent me this recipe for fruit-flavored ice pops because they’re really something that kids (and the kids-at-heart) can delight in this summer. If you ever wondered how to make popsicles other than buying them in the store, here it is. They’re easy to do too!

Ice pops

Banana Flavored Pops
½ cup                sugar
1 tbsp.          MAYA Cornstarch
¾  cup               whole milk
½ cup                cream
½ cup                water
3 tablespoons        lemon juice
2 pieces             ripe bananas

Strawberry Flavored Pops

½ cup                  sugar
2 tbsp.          MAYA Cornstarch
1 cup                  whole milk
½ cup                  cream
1 cup                  frozen strawberries
½ cup                  strawberry filling (optional)
3 tbsp.            lemon juice

Orange-Mango Flavored Pops

1/2 cup                 sugar
2 tbsp.            MAYA Cornstarch
¼ cup                   whole milk
½ cup                   cream
1 ½ cups                orange juice
½ cup                   mango concentrated
2 tablespoons           lemon juice

Prepare Banana Pops: In a sauce pan, combine sugar and cornstarch then add in milk, cream and water.  Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes.  Remove from heat and cool a bit. Put the mixture in a blender, add in lemon juice and bananas and process until smooth. Pour in a popsicle mould.  Insert the sticks and freeze for 6 hours.

Prepare Strawberry Pops: In a sauce pan, combine sugar and cornstarch then add in milk and cream.  Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes.  Remove from heat and cool a bit. Put the mixture in a blender, add in frozen strawberries, strawberry filling and lemon juice and process until smooth.  Pour in a popsicle mould.  Insert the sticks and freeze for 6 hours.

Prepare Orange-Mango Pops: In a sauce pan, combine sugar and cornstarch then add in milk and cream.  Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes.  Remove from heat and cool a bit. Put the mixture in a blender, add in orange juice, mango concentrate and lemon juice and process until smooth.  Pour in a popsicle mould.  Insert the sticks and freeze for 6 hours.

NOTE: To make a three layer popsicle, pour a little amount of each flavoured mixture into popsicle mould allowing each flavors to freeze for a few minutes before adding the second and a third mixture.

Sony to launch Xperia ZR w/ IP58 rating

Wouldn’t it be nice if Sony’s flagship handset has a non-1080p version with a slightly smaller screen and the same water/dust resistant properties, if not better? Well, it seems that we don’t have to wait too long, because rumor has it that the Japanese firm will be releasing a mid-range handset called Xperia ZR.

The speculated handset is the slightly toned down version of the Xperia Z sans the FHD, 5-inch display and glass at the back. The Xperia ZR will instead sport a 4.6-inch HD display and IP58 certification which allows it to be submerged up to a meter and a half for 30 minutes.

xperia

In terms of configuration, the Xperia ZR doesn’t differ much from its flagship sibling. It’s rumored to be equipped with a Qualcomm S4 Pro quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage. The ZR will also feature the same 13MP Exmor RS main camera of the Xperia Z.

Sony has yet to comment about this rumor, so it’s best to take this with the usual grain of salt. But if Xperia ZR turns out to be true, we think that it will be a good follow-up to the Z and ZL tandem.
