Bangus fest 2009 preparations underway

With less than two months away, preparations are underway for this year’s celebration of the Bangus Festival.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chairman of the festival, said the event will kick off on April 15 to May 1 with daily activities and happenings.

The Vice Mayor called for public and private support even as she encouraged all Dagupenos to invite their relatives and friends abroad or from other parts of the country to participate in the festival especially during the main events – Festivals of the North, Gilon! Gilon! Ed Dalan street dancing competitions and Bangusan Street Party.

During the festivals of the north, spectators will get the rare chance to see the battle of the best festivals of Pangasinan, Ilocos, Tarlac, Pampanga and Cordillera all in one event.

“We in the city government will work hard to equal if not surpass last year’s success. We’ll try to set an example in the province on what a real festival should be,” she said.

In an interview with the media after the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod on February 16, Fernandez bared that the much-awaited “Festivals of the North” street dancing competition will be giving away bigger cash prizes for the winning entries in each category – cities and municipalities.

First, second and third placers will receive P200, 000, P100, 000 and P50, 000, respectively.
As early as February, the roster of entries had reached the maximum number set by the organizers – solid proof of how keenly anticipated the festival is. From only 17 participants last year, 20 cities and 10 municipalities have already confirmed their participation in the competition.

“We will get the best and winning street dancers from all festivals in the region to perform in Dagupan City this year so don’t miss this opportunity,” she quips.

Another highlight of the festivity is the grandest street party called Bangusan Street Party that will feature famous celebrities and rock bands in the country today. A simultaneous display of colorful fireworks will wow the crowd in the midst of the party.

The Vice Mayor noted that the members of the events committee decided to transfer the venue of the party to De Venecia Extension Highway to accommodate a larger audience and to avoid stampede incidents.

As to financial support, Fernandez said there have been numerous sponsorships from big businesses and giant TV networks. She added that the earnings from the festival shall redound to civic and charity projects of the city government. (Leziel T. Cayabyab)

No to Right of Reply bill

I’m glad that Senators Mar Roxas and Chiz Escudero have withdrawn their signatures on the dangerous Right-of-Reply bill that the Senate passed last July and which is due for second reading at the House of Representatives.

I’m not surprised about Rep. Monico Puentevella pushing for a bill that would be disastrous to democracy in this country. What can the people expect from an Arroyo lackey?

But Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr? He who fought the Marcos dictatorship? Disappointment is an understatement.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines is circulating a petition opposing the bill. I’m reproducing the statement here. This is for journalists to fight for their constitutional right to perform their job of informing the people.

The Constitution guarantees the right of the people to be informed so that they can make enlightened decisions. The Constitution says no law should be passed abridging freedom of the press. The Pimentel-Puentevella bill abridges freedom of the press.

Journalists who want to sign may write nujphil@gmail.com

Following is the journalists’ statement on the right of reply bill:

“The Right of Reply Bill is an ill-conceived piece of legislation that violates two of the most cherished freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, those of the press and of expression.

“It is both unfortunate and ironic that the principal authors of the bill in the two chambers of Congress ought to have known better, Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. having earned his reputation as a champion of civil rights and Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella having been president of the Negros Press Club.

“It is also clear, from the pronouncements of both lawmakers, that this bill is a product of the sorriest excuse for legislation – personal pique.

“The House version of the bill, HB 3306, parrots the Senate’s SB2150 except it would have the reply run a day after receipt instead of the three days the Senate grants, and seeks to impose heftier fines and the absence of self-regulation (in the case of block-timers) and sunset clauses.

“Both bills state that “all persons…who are accused directly or indirectly of committing, having committed or intending to commit any crime or offense defined by law, or are criticized by innuendo, suggestion or rumor for any lapse in behavior in public or private life shall have the right to reply to charges or criticisms published or printed in newspapers, magazines, newsletters or publications circulated commercially or for free, or aired or broadcast over radio, television, websites, or through any electronic devices.”

“They also would mandate that these replies be “published or broadcast in the same space of the newspapers, magazine, newsletter or publication, or aired over the same program on radio, television, website or through any electronic device.”

“The danger in the right of reply bill is that it would legislate what the media OUGHT to publish or air, while casting a chilling effect that could dissuade the more timorous from publishing or airing what they SHOULD.

“The bills would free public officials, especially the corrupt – and they are legion – of accountability and give them carte blanche to force their lies on the suffering public.

“As one article on the right of reply bill says, ‘It lumps together imputations of a crime with simple criticism ‘of any lapse in behavior in public or private life’ or what would otherwise be considered ‘fair comment.’ There is no judicial review. It does not differentiate direct and indirect criticism. It has been noted that under the proposed law a journalist does not even have to be in error to draw a right of reply claim.”

“We would be the last to say that the Philippine media are without fault. Yes, we understand perfectly the frustration and anger of Pimentel and Puentevella over some media outlet’s refusal to air their sides on issues.

“Alas, but we cannot allow the sins of the few to be an excuse for the wholesale muzzling of a free press and the suppression of free expression. To do so would allow bad governance to triumph.

“We call on Senator Pimentel and Representative Puentevella to withdraw their bills.

“We urge the media and the people to close ranks against the passage of this bill, to challenge it before the Supreme Court if it is passed, and, if even that fails, to defy it by refusing to comply.

“No less than our freedoms are at stake. This is a battle we cannot afford to lose.”

BYAHILO at the Armscor Shooting Range

Just recently, BYAHILO was invited at an event where part of the activity is a shootfest in Armscor Shooting Range at Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.

armscor shooting range, makati

When I learned that we were actually be shooting using real guns I was hesitant at first.

In my entire lifetime, I have never ever tried holding a gun, much more firing it.

So when the event organizers asked for the first batch of volunteers, I stepped back so that I won’t get noticed if no one volunteers.

But after seeing how thrilled the first group, I volunteered to be on the second batch.

I was really really nervous. We were made to load the bullets to the magazine ourselves. The loading process alone was already a challenge for me. I just can’t seem to insert the bullets as they keep on slipping out of the magazine.

When the instructor gave a clearance to start shooting, it took me a few more seconds before I finally pulled the trigger.

Until I finally mustered enough courage to pull it.

The first shot came and as expected, it was off-target.

The force absorbed by the body every firing is quite tremendous. And it really was a bad timing because I have an aching shoulders at that time. So firing gun at that time was a bit painful.

And 25 shots later, my target sheet still looks clean. I know I am lousy in firing guns but still, I had so much fun.

And at the very least, I can now say that I have finally conquered my fear of holding real guns.

Check out the short vids I took during the activity.

Jollibee opens in New York, a first in the East Coast

Thanks to Spanx for giving Pinoy foodies a heads-up on this piece of news:

Philippines’ Most Popular Fast-food Chain Lands in Queens. Via Grub Street.

500 overseas branches, and counting? Wow! This is just positive news, especially as we don’ t really see too many Filipino companies going global. I did see Pancake House International during my last visit to Malaysia. I had to blink twice. Kudos to these firms for expanding.

Jollibee sign

Photo shows a signage I saw in Jollibee Macapagal Avenue. I simply had to take a picture as I was amused, without knowing why. It wasn’t like any store signs I saw elsewhere. And mostly because Chicken Joy is just a joy when hunger strikes :P
