How not to conduct an interview, Kris Aquino style

Kris Aquino talked about herself in interview with Andrew Garfield.

I’d like to thank Kris Aquino for giving me very good materials for our training of journalists.

Nothing beats her interviews with the stars of The Amazing Spider-Man2 for an example of “How not to conduct an interview.”

An interview is important when doing a story because the writer will be able to present to the readers the person he will be writing about with first hand observations. Through well thought-out questions, he will be able to draw the interviewee to talk about his views which in the first place made him worthy to be interviewed.

In an interview, the star is the interviewee. The attention should be on him and the interviewer is just the facilitator, to bring out what can be elicited from him.

That’s not what Kris Aquino did in an interview with Andrew Garfield who played Peter Parker, the Spiderman and Jamie Foxx, the super villain Electro, in Singapore last month.

There’s a Tagalog word for what Kris did in her interviews with Garfield and Foxx: nagkalat.

One, she brought her son, Bimby. So improper . So unprofessional. So Kris Aquino.

Two, she talked a lot about herself- a no-no in interviews.

She bragged to Garfield that the movie of her son, “My Little Bossings,” beat the first The Amazing Spider-Man in the box-office in the Philippines.

It was neither here nor there. The two movies were not shown at the same time. The gall to compare a Spiderman movie to the inane My Little Bossings. It’s like comparing a painting by Ben Cab to a tarpaulin streamer.

What can Garfield say but “Fantastic… Well, congratulations.”

But in a way, Bimby did something good because while she was telling Garfield how she was “blown away” by the first Spiderman movie, Bimby, who was restless and distracting during the interview, blurted out, “And she was sleeping.” Garfield laughed.

Served her right.

In her interview with Foxx, she bragged that many consider her “the Oprah of the Philippines.”

Foxx replied, “Oh, is that right?”

Kris asked Foxx, who is known to be a good friend of Oprah Winfrey to tell the American TV superstar that she (Kris) is her fan.

Kris Aquino’s conduct was forgivable if she were someone, maybe 15 or 16 years old, who is new in the business. But she is 43 years old and has been in media (she even told Garfield that she is seen on TV mornings and evenings) for years and years.

But thanks Kris. In the next journalists training by VERA Files, I will use the video of your The Amazing Spider-Man2 interviews with the instruction:”Huwag tularan.”

A celibate Kris Aquino as president will eradicate poverty in PH

Kris shares with Boy Abunda her theory about her success.

Kris shares with Boy Abunda her theory about her success.

I cannot imagine the Philippines without Kris Aquino. It would be boring.

I want Kris Aquino for President.

Everybody talks about the need for out-of-the box solutions to the problem of poverty that is the lot of almost a third of the country’s 99 million population. Kris Aquino has found the solution: don’t have sex and you will be blessed with money beyond your dreams.

In an interview last Tuesday with best friend Boy Abunda in her classy all-white house, Aquino couldn’t contain her joy for all the blessings coming her way: the box-office success of the movie of her son, Bimby, even if critics said it was inane (one critic said it was “contempt for the audience”); a hefty new contract with ABS-CBN after she floated the rumor that she was considering the job offer of businessman Manny V. Pangilinan to head TV5; plus many more.

These are her choice quotes:

“Ngayon ko na-realize pala talaga na it’s possible na ‘yung kaligayahan mo it doesn’t come pala from fulfillment sa sarili but it comes from seeing people loving your child. Sinabi ko nga, nagdarasal ako, ‘God, ano ba ang nagawa kong bongga para ibigay mo ito kay Bimb?’ Kasi hindi ba nasa Biblia ‘yon na kung ano ang itanim mo bilang magulang ‘yon ang aanihin ng anak. So sabi ko, ‘Thank you God.’”

“Kasi siguro mabait ako, kasi siguro celibate ako, sorry I have to say, let’s be honest. … I’m just saying na siguro parang alam ko kung ano ang priorities in life ko and siguro talaga kung ano ang pinakamahalaga sa iyo, ‘yun ang ipagkakaloob sa iyo ng Diyos at ang pinakamahalaga sa akin ay ‘yung dalawang anak ko.”

“I know my priorities siguro kaya na bi-blessed because I don’t have sex.”

Let’s try to follow Kris’ logic: she is blessed –so rich, she is one of the country’s top taxpayers – because she is mabait. That means the Filipinos living in poverty with no roof over their heads, the children scavenging for food are not mabait.

She said she is blessed because she doesn’t have sex. That means all those poor people are having an active sex life. And all those who are having an active sex life are not blessed.

Such genius. Only a Kris Aquino could have come up with that theory.

So if Kris becomes president, she will be a good example of population control. No sex, no more children. We will all be rich and blessed. Hurray! Kris Aquino for President.

With Kris Aquino in Malacañang, there will be complete transparency (who needs the Freedom of Information law?). Nothing will be taboo for her: from the color of her underwear (In her “Morning Girls” show with Korina Sanchez in 2004, she even revealed without any prodding the color of her panty) to her quarrels with her lovers (In 2003, she related on TV her bedroom fight with live-in partner, actor Joey Marquez. She said “Sinasabi nila that I grabbed at his genitals. I did. I wanted to crush it.”)

You would think her “Joey, you gave me STD” would be difficult to top? You will be surprised with what Kris can come up with in the future.

With Kris Aquino as president, it will not only be more fun in the Philippines. It will be a much-blessed Philippines.

Kris Aquino and the Sultan of Johor

Sultan of Johor shows Kris Aquino his car collection

It was insensitive of Kris Aquino to feature the Sultan of Johor at the time when the wounds of the February-March Sabah bloodfight have not healed and the root of the problem has not been addressed.

Tuesday’s feature of Kris TV was the Sultan of Johor, Ibrahim Ismail, a close friend of the Aquinos.

Kris related that her family’s closeness with the Sultan of Johor, Ibrahim Ismail, dates back to their Boston stay in the mid’80s. The Sultan was a student in the United States at that time. Internet search showed that he received military training in the US–at Fort Benning, Georgia and later at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Kris said the image that she had of the Sultan during their Boston meetings was Ibrahim driving a Rolls Royce.
The Sultan showed off his collection of expensive cars, numbering 300. It is reported that the Johor Sultan and President Aquino share a passion for luxury cars.

Kris excitedly quipped while she was touring the Sultan’s air-conditioned garage, “I’ll show Noy the video and he’ll come.”

The Lahad Datu siege in March this year, which was precipitated by the decision of the Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III to press their ownership of a large part of Sabah, now one of the 13 states of Malaysia despite the claim of the Philippines over the oil and mineral rich territory , some three-fourths of it was given by the Sultan of Brunei to the Sultan of Sulu in 1704 as a reward for the latter’s help in suppressing a rebellion.

Early February, some 80 to 100 men led by Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram, brother of Jamalul Kiram III, arrived in the coastal village of Lahad Datu in Sabah and resisted attempts by Malaysian authorities to expel them. The fighting spread to the town of Semporna. One of the Malaysian policemen killed was L/Kpl Mohd Azrol Tukiran, a close friend of the Johor prince, Tuanku Laksamana Tunku Abdul Jalil, who is also a member of the Malaysian police.

A Malaysian newspaper reported that the Sultan of Johor wept over the policeman’s death saying the victim and his son” close friends and even slept next to each other during their police special forces training in Ulu Kinta in Perak.”

The Star quoted Sultan Ibrahim as saying “losing a close friend had affected the prince.”

Innocent civilians, mostly Filipinos, were caught in the conflict. President Aquino never condemned the atrocities. He even blamed Kiram for starting the trouble and threatened him and his men with legal actions.

It was a civil society groups that filed a complaint against Malaysia for maltreatment of Filipinos before the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

Many wondered who was advising Aquino in his pro-Malaysian position in the Sabah conflict. Jacel Kiram, granddaughter of Jamalul Kiram III, said they have information that the Sultan of Johor was in touch with Aquino.

The position of Sultan of Johor, the 5th largest state by land area and 2nd most populous state in Malaysia, is ceremonial. The power is exercised by the chief minister.

In power plays, even figureheads have their uses. Apparently, Malaysia knows how to use them.

And the Philippines? Kris TV.
