Used iPhone 5 + Flappy Bird = $90,000++

Just when we thought that the Flappy Bird’s removal from the App Store and Play Store is the last we’ll ever hear from the now defunct app, it made the headlines again. This time in a form of used iPhone 5, with the game app still installed on it, which is being sold on eBay for a little under hundred grand!

The eBay user placed the handset for auction on the site with a starting price of USD990. Sixty-five bids (last we checked) later the price skyrocketed from less than a grand to a whopping USD90,200 or almost four million in our local currency! Not bad for a preowned 16GB iPhone 5, eh?

There are two things that probably crossed your mind when you read about this; (1) Why would anybody, in their right state of mind, buy a used iPhone 5 for a hundred grand just for the sake of Flappy Bird, or (2) Holy Cow, I’m sitting on a frigging gold mine!

For the first question, your guess is as good as ours. As for number two though, well sad to say but YOU’RE NOT. See what happened was eBay has taken the advertisment down (and other similar posts) because it violates the company’s terms of service, here’s why:

Smartphones and tablets must be restored to factory settings before they are allowed to be sold on eBay. Please remove all content from your device, including the game Flappy Bird, before you attempt to list your item again. Please be sure your current and future listings follow these guidelines, keeping in mind that additional violations of this policy could result in the suspension of your account.

We understand that you may have been unaware of this eBay policy, and we encourage you to learn how to keep your experiences on eBay successful.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Thanks,

eBay

Well folks, there goes our shot at being an overnight millionaire, at least through eBay that is. Of course, there are other channels where you can sell your preowned iPhone with Flappy Bird and if you’re lucky enough, maybe you’ll stumble upon a rich bastard that’s willing (*cough* Stupid Enough *cough*) to give you Php4M for it.

Will you be getting a new smartphone this December?

It is Christmas season, and most of us are already looking for gifts to give, gifts to ask for and gifts for ourselves (13th month pays? Self-rewarding?). A lot, surely, are keeping an eye on gadgets.

There are a lot of choices out there. Some might eye on the already available Samsung Galaxy S III while some might opt for the more recent Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

If you’re not planning to go that way, there are many more options. We’re pretty sure that there’s no ‘best’ phone, but there is indeed a best phone for you. There’s the Nokia PureView 808 for photographers and some rugged smartphones like the Sony Xperia Acro S for the adventurers.

The iPhone 5 will be launching before Christmas, but let’s not forget that there more devices available outside the Philippines that haven’t arrived here yet. Well, not officially of course. Most of them are available through the gray market and through other sources, but of course these devices will be sold at relatively higher prices.

For example, the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 are already available in the Philippines through other re-sellers – but not through Apple’s stores yet. You can get them at much higher costs, but this is all just the result of the laws of supply & demand.

We can’t help but feel hesitant to buy gadgets (and to ask for gadgets) as we know that there is a possibility that they might get immediately outdated within a few months.

There are the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 – which are not officially announced yet for the Philippines. The list also includes the much awaited Nokia Lumia 920, the Microsoft Surface and the iPad Mini.

And of course, a lot of Filipinos are also waiting on Blackberry 10, which will be available very early next year.

There are a lot of reasons not to buy a new smartphone (or tablet) this December, but of course, what’s Christmas without giving? You’re going to miss the whole point and the spirit if we delay all the giving.

And also, you can’t keep waiting forever. Here we are, receiving the all new iPad and all of a sudden, a newer and faster iPad comes out months later.

So, what will it be? Will you be getting a new smartphone regardless of the price? Would you buy what’s available now? Or would you just let December pass and save the upgrades for next year?

Smart’s also accepting reservations for the iPhone 5

Needless to say, Smart isn’t gonna let Globe just take all the attention come December 14. Smart has also added a reservation page on their website for the iPhone 5.

The “registration of interest” is a bit simpler as compared to Globe’s. Everything is done on a single page where prospective buyers just need to select which color of the iPhone they’re planning to get and the storage capacity.

Then, they just need to provide basic information like their full name, birth date, current cellphone number and their email address. Once done, they’ll be routed to a confirmation page where it says that they’ll be contacted by a representative.
