Battle of the Mini Tablets: Nokia N1 vs. iPad Mini 3

We’ve already put the Nokia N1 against HTC’s Nexus 9.  This time, the Finnish giant’s new tablet goes head-to-head against the Apple iPad Mini 3, a tablet of the same size. Which one takes the cake? Find out more after the break.

Despite having  the same screen size and resolution which amounts to the same number of ppi, the N1 beats the Mini 3 in a lot of aspects: A better processor, bigger amount of RAM, larger front and rear camera megapixel counts, a better connector standard in the form of reversible USB-C, and a lighter price tag. Apple’s mini tablet, however, outperforms the N1’s battery, has a limited NFC function in the form of Apple Pay, security with TouchID, and offers cellular tablet options.

As for the OS, we can’t compare apples with oranges. Android 5.0 Lollipop is on its way to gaining a better foothold with interface overhauls thanks to Google’s Material Design guidelines, and the iOS 8 has been very user-friendly; its collection of apps and games optimized for tablets are outstanding.

It is also worth noting that FoxConn, the same OEM Apple taps to create and assemble its iDevices, made the new Nokia device; hence the similarities seen in its hardware design — camera, button, and USB port placements, rounded edges, and speaker grills at the bottom. It may come as a surprise to some, but one should not worry. Everyone can expect the same Nokia feel and quality we always love, as the Finnish giant contributes and imposes strict quality control on the design and construction of its new and forthcoming devices to companies it licenses its brand name to.

The Tablet Kings: iPad Air 2 vs iPad Mini 3 vs Nexus 9

We have had a lot of announcements in the past few days, and that includes the flagship devices of two major companies competing in the tablet space – Google & Apple with the Nexus 9 and the new iPads. We now put them side to side to put everything in scale.

If you look at the sheer numbers of the specs of these devices, we can easily give the crown to the Nexus 9 for having lots of cores for its graphics, a higher CPU clock speed, its 2GB RAM and its higher megapixel front-facing camera resolution – but in reality, higher numbers do not necessarily translate to better performance.

While the screen resolution is similar across devices, the sizes aren’t: the iPad Air 2 is the largest and the thinnest, the Mini 3 is the smallest and the Nexus 9 sits right in the middle, also being the thickest by a small margin. In terms of storage options on the other hand, there are more variants going in favor of the new iPads. However, at $399, the Nexus 9 is basically competing with year-old hardware in the iPad Mini 3, so in that case – the bang for the buck goes to the Nexus 9, unless Touch ID is of extreme importance to you.

While we’re still not convinced you should take photos with your tablet, these new devices offer improved optics and camera features – which will have to be tested first before deciding which is better.

On top of everything, especially your preference for tablet sizes, this is where the never ending argument of which OS is better comes in – Android 5.0 Lollipop or iOS 8.1? These are truly the things that set these tablets apart regardless of specs as it also brings in the companies’ ecosystems into play.

iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 leaked… by Apple

It has been said that Apple is set to unveil new set of iPads later this week, and although Google beat them to the punch with the announcement of the new Nexus 9, the Cupertino-based firm has a trick up its sleeve as it “accidentally” leaks the upcoming iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 through the downloadable iOS 8.1 User Guide.

Along with the full frontal and posterior shots (which looks a whole lot like the current generation of iPads) of the two upcoming slates from Apple, one of the screenshot of the digital manual also indicates that both tablets will now be equipped with TouchID sensor, an embedded security feature first introduced on the iPhone 5S.

Another feature that was listed on the user guide was the iPad Air 2’s ability to take Burst Shot by holding the “Take Picture” button inside the tablet’s native camera app.

It’s still unclear whether Apple did this on purpose or not, but such stunt is so atypical of the once so-secretive company.

iPad Mini with Retina display due in Q3

Those who are waiting for the next iteration of the iPad Mini with Retina display might just have to wait a little longer as reports are saying that it will come out in the third-quarter of this year.

According reports, Apple is already preparing to release, not one, but two iPad Minis. The first one, which will come out in Q3 of this year will have the much awaited Retina display. The second one, which has a speculated early 2014 release, will also have a Retina display but with the addition of an updated processor.

“We see two refreshes coming. One in the second half of this year, then one in Q1 of 2014. The Q1 device will have a Retina display plus an updated processor.” says NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim. Shim also speculates that Apple will utilize the iPhone 5‘s low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) display technology for the next-gen iPad Minis.
