7 new features for old iPhones when iOS 8 arrives

Still rocking an iPhone 4S? If you’re not one of the people getting the new iPhone 6 then fret not. With iOS 8’s pending release in a few hours, your “old school” iPhone will pretty much get a refreshed software packed with added functionalities. Here are some of the new features to be available for both the iPhone 6 and even the earlier generations.

Embedded time-lapse mode

The iOS 8’s camera app has been incorporated with a time-lapse function (in addition to the slow-motion mode on iPhone 5S) that can be used to shoot long durations of footage and speed it up afterwards – pretty much like the Hyperlapse app.

Improved typing and support for third-party keyboards

Once we get the update, typing experience should improve along with the addition of gesture-recognition embedded onto the keyboard. SwiftKey (Android keyboard maker) is one of the developers contributing to make this possible. In addition, expect Apple’s QuickType to be smarter in a way that it suggests simpler words when texting, while it offers more profound phrases when writing an email.

Cross-platform Continuity

With just a swipe, the website you’re visiting on your MacBook can be continued in your iPhone using the company’s Continuity feature. It works vice-versa, too. With a click of a small icon, you can finish a task from the phone to your laptop just like that.

Health app for everyone

Tracking your calorie consumption among other things can be done without third-party apps. Apple’s Health app will come standard when you download the OS update and will add the functionality of pairing with other health-tracking devices like Jawbone’s UP. It will then collate the data and display it in one dashboard where details are listed down – pretty useful for tracking how active (or inactive) we were during the entire day.

Easily share to different apps

Apple has been limiting users in terms of sharing their content. For example, a photo in iOS 7 can be shared through Mail, Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr. With the arrival of the new OS, users will enjoy more sharing options straight to apps like Instagram or as according to what we currently look for, direct-sharing to a photo-editing app.

Accept calls on your laptop

When you update both your MacBook and iPhone to their latest OS versions, picking up a call on your computer is possible as long as your iPhone is connected to the same Wi-Fi as the laptop.

Replying straight from the notification

With the implementation of iOS 8, users can now reply to iMessages straight from the notification. Basically, the goal here is to minimize the app-switching effort of the user. This feature isn’t at all limited to Apple’s native apps since third-party developers can also make use of this function for more efficiency in navigation experience.

There we go. Those are just some of the new features that will give our not-so latest iPhones a software makeover. With those, it’s not too bad to not get the iPhone 6!

7 Things You Need To Know About Apple’s Big Event

Apple had a lot of announcements today, relevant to consumers, journalists, developers and people in the industry altogether. With that said, we summarize the whole event into 7 things – 7 things you need to know about Apple’s September event 2014.

Apple Event

1. The iPhone 6 has been announced and it has a new design with better software, faster internals, an improved camera, a Retina HD display and more, proving it to be a worthy upgrade.

2. There’s another iPhone, and it’s surprisingly a larger iPhone 6 called the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch display and better screen resolution. It’s also $100 more expensive than the iPhone 6.

3. iOS 8 is coming to the following devices on September 17 for free:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPod Touch 5th Gen
  • iPad 2
  • iPad Mini
  • iPad with Retina Display
  • iPad Mini with Retina Display
  • iPad Air

4. Apple is aiming to replace your credit card with Apple Pay via NFC enabled devices, Touch ID and Passbook, but it won’t be for the Philippine market just yet.

5. Next gen games with Metal are coming to iOS very soon with improved graphic performance – and it can run on resolutions higher than some of those of game consoles.

6. The iWatch exists and has been announced as the Apple Watch. It has a new way of navigating the smartwatch with a digital crown, and it has everything you’d expect from a smartwatch coming from Apple.

7. No word on local pricing and availability yet, but the iPhones will be available as soon as the 19th in places such as Hong Kong. As for the Watch, we will have to wait for 2015. So far, the soonest we can get is iOS 8.

Apart from what is mentioned above, Apple highlighted WatchKit for developers, the individual features of each device (and even a time allotted for landscape orientation) and a lot more. 5 iOS 8 features already found on Android

Apple has talked a lot about their new mobile operating system, iOS 8, in WWDC 2014. While there were no extreme changes and hardware announcements, we all got a bunch of small improvements aimed at big changes. However, most of the new additions sound completely familiar, for non-iOS users at least. Now where have we seen these features before? Here are 5 iOS 8 features already found on Android:

Notifications

Interactive Notifications

Just like the notification center added in iOS 5, interactive notifications aren’t a first as we’ve already seen the functionality in Jellybean years ago. Interactive notifications basically mean that you can quickly respond to an app notif without having to open the app first. As seen in the iOS 8 demo, you can now comment or like in Facebook straight from your notifications; this is also available in the lockscreen. While functionality may slightly differ, the idea isn’t exactly new.

Hey, Siri

Long before Apple, Google has already done this with “Ok, Google”, allowing users to do a search on things without having to press anything – and even before that, the Moto X did the same thing and better – capable of responding even with the screen turned off. Apple’s addition of Shazam into Siri is a nice touch and is totally new though, something that Microsoft’s singing Cortana can’t do just yet too.

Here’s one thing Android has done for a long time – Widgets – implemented years ago when the OS was still young. Apple now takes the same idea and incorporates it in a different way, adding it into the notification center and opens it for third party development. Widgets on Android can do a lot of things and has grown to improve throughout the years, so we’ll have to see how Apple develops this idea hiding in the pull down notification shade.

QuickType Keyboard

Predicting words on top of the keyboard isn’t also new as well. Windows Phone has this, Android has this and BlackBerry has something similar. It’s an entirely useful feature, but Apple’s quite late when it comes to incorporating new features to their keyboard. We won’t be surprised if swipe-typing is introduced next year.

And speaking of keyboards, you can now change it as well! We’ll be seeing more customization in iOS 8 as we’ll find widgets, keyboards and a lot more in the app store. Developers can now also build deeper into the platform, allowing you to, say, add a bit more depth into editing photos in the native app by adding more functionality. We’ve seen that all before, haven’t we?

We’re sure there’s a lot more, but the line of similarities are less seen. For example, timelapse, family sharing is to multiple users, iMessage is to Hangouts and iCloud Drive is to Google Drive. However, we’re not saying every feature is already found on Android; HealthKit, HomeKit and a tad more comes in as examples.

To sum it all up, iOS took a lot of existing ideas from the competition once again and built upon it to distinguish itself. The features said above aren’t exact copies, and to a certain extent even, they also better the experience. This isn’t the first time someone took some ideas from another platform and we’re sure this isn’t the last. Either way, with competition all around us and as they polish up their offerings – we benefit.
