BlackBerry Z10 unboxed, in the flesh!

We finally got ourselves a review unit of the BlackBerry Z10 and went thru some more details that we’ve not yet covered in our previous articles about it.

There are actually 3 color variants of the Z10 but we think only the white and black colors will be available. We prefer the white color better than the black one though. Here’s a quick video run-through:

The Z10 represents a drastic design change that BlackBerry introduced into their newest line. It has now followed the usual design signature of Android’s vast competitive market — large capacitive screen, powerful hardware, LTE support and an app-centric environment. It’s short of BlackBerry saying “me too can play that game!“.

What is most compelling about the new BlackBerry offering is a tight integration of hardware and software. Just like how Apple perfected the marriage of iPhone and iOS, BlackBerry’s edge will also be the control between both the hardware and the software.

As such, we’re more inclined to compare the iPhone 5 to the BlackBerry Z10 instead of any other Android handset.

Probably the biggest challenge for BlackBerry right now is to get the consumers to be more familiar with the BB10 OS and its UI. We have to admit that the UI will be somewhat confusing at first. This is because it’s a huge departure from the usual Home-based navigation we’ve seen in iOS and Android (even including Windows Phone 8).

To the un-initiated, the BB 10 UI could be a challenge to use but once you’re completely acquainted, you will notice the maturity and elegance of the interface.

Our review unit supports Globe LTE, based on the nano-SIM we used with it. The signal indicator shows 4G when connected to the LTE network. Speedtest is giving me a downlink speed of of 28Mbps and uplink of 9Mbps.

BlackBerry Z10: P29,990

Blackberry Z10 launch

Had my first glance of the new BlackBerry Z10 the other day which BB fans can now reserve at www.buybb10.com before its availability on March 19.Announced retail price is at a high-end P29,990 although this is expected to be bundled up with plans by Smart, Globe & Sun. What can I say … ’twas my first time to see a Blackberry without the physical QWERTY keyboard that the brand is known for. This one is all multi-touch!

Features to watch out for in this smartphone:

Lotsa power under the hood with Qualcomm S4 Plus dual core processor

2 GB of Random Access Memory (RAM) and 16GB of internal storage

LTE-ready

8 MP rear camera with a TimeShift feature that lets you choose the best out of the many frames taken in a single shot

4.2 inches screen display with 355 pixels per inch for extra vivid colors

Weight: 137.5 grams

Dimensions: 66 mm (width), 130 mm (height), 9mm (thinness)

The Z10 is powered by Blackberry 10, the “re-designed and re-engineered” BB platform that is supposed to be faster, smoother and more responsive.New features include the all-new browser, a cool predictive keyboard, the Blackberry Balance technology separating work applications from personal content, and the BB Safeguard technology for enhanced security, among others.

Of course, there’s also BlackBerry World with 70,000 apps but we think this is way, way behind Google and Apple with more than half a million apps in the market, thus providing a vast ocean of selection for its users.

We wish BlackBerry good luck for this product. Seen at the launch (from left): BB endorser Borgy Manotoc, BB Country Director for the Philippines Cameron Vernest, and Kristian Salvo, BlackBerry Philippines Business Manager.

BlackBerry Z10 meets iOS and Android users

More than its external features, much of the publicity that’s going for the recently announced Blackberry Z10 has something to do with its OS. And while there’s no doubt that the Blackberry OS 10 offers innovative and relevant features, we wonder how long will it take for an average user to figure out the phone’s basic functionalities.

BBZ10

Luckily, we’re not the only one wondering about this. Mashable has taken this curiosity to the next level and asked a few willing first-timers to execute basic tasks on the new Blackberry Z10. Watch out what happens when Android/iOS users meets the Blackberry OS 10:

So does this mean that the new Blackberry OS is not user-friendly? Well, it’s kinda early to tell, but judging from my experience when using the Dev Alpha device, I think that the platform was nothing short of great. However, as with any other new things in this world, it will take some time before a user can fully maximize the operating system’s great features.

BlackBerry 10 phones vs. the world, a brief comparison

All of our waiting has come to an end. The BlackBerry 10 phones are out, namely the Z10 & the Q10. It is without doubt the best of BlackBerry’s crop, but how does it fare against its competitors?

bb10

A lot of specs aren’t given as of now, and that includes the display technology, the processor used and so forth. However, phones like the iPhone are proof that you don’t need extremely beefy specs to run a phone smoothly – all you need is the optimization of the hardware and the software. In fact, it seems like the new BlackBerry phones are all about this.

As you can see above, it does not hold neither the worst nor the best specs. It’s exactly right in between.

The next BlackBerry devices won’t feature 1080p screens and 8-core CPUs, but we’re really impressed with what we have seen. They even feature some stuff that some high-end phones don’t have such as a micro-HDMI port, NFC, expandable storage and all the other small stuff.

BlackBerry 10 doesn’t run on the best specs, but it is more than decent by today’s standards. What is the use of a 1080p phone 8-core phone if it runs on something like the Symbian s60? After all, it’s all about hardware and software working together these days.
