12-inch Apple Macbook accepts third-party USB Type-C cables

Apple made its new 12-inch Macbook implement a Type-C USB port, but that doesn’t mean it will only accept proprietary cables. The company made it capable of running even third-party cables as long as they meet the standard requirements.

“Your MacBook will charge from USB-C power adapters not manufactured by Apple if they adhere to the USB Power Delivery specification,” Apple stated on an updated support page.

That’s not all that changed in relation to compatibility of Type-C USBs, they are also ready to be used for the following functions:

  • Third-party USB Type-C chargers, in addition to cables, can also be used; not limiting you like the previous MagSafe chargers used for other MacBooks.
  • Connecting the 12-inch MacBook to ethernet via the USB Type-C port is possible as well.

The new MacBook is just one of the many devices that use this kind of USB connection. If you want to know more about it we published “What is USB Type-C and why it matters?” that explains what it basically is. We also have a list of devices equipped with USB Type-C for your reference.
