Nokia have brought the house down when it unveiled its 41MP sensor. And while it’s still considered as the king in terms of pixel count, Sony has taken a different approach with its sensor and focused more on the performance side rather than just the megapixel count.
That still holds true with the Japanese firm’s new Sony Exmor RS IMX230 – a 1/2.4-inch CMOS sensor with a stacked design and a 192-point phase detect autofocus system.
The aforementioned AF system should, in theory, allow the sensor to lock in on a subject much faster, as well as quickly track fast moving subjects.
But that’s not all. According to Sony’s literature, the IMX230 has also received some improvements on how it takes HDR photos (if you’re in to that), not to mention the ability to record 4K videos at thirty (30) frames-per-second and slow-motion HD clips at 120fps.
The new Sony IMX230 Exmor RS will initially be available in 21-megapixel flavor and Sony will be shipping it to their partners starting on April next year. However, the company claims that they’re also planning to release a 16MP variant towards the latter part of 2015.
