MMDA launches Traffic Signalization System

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has launched its newest initiative to ease traffic situation in the Metro – the Traffic Signalization System.

The Traffic Signalization System (TSS), is MMDA’s new traffic management network that is capable of monitoring 400 intersections in Metro Manila using state-of-the-art equipment and software.

The system, which is housed inside MMDA’s new Command and Control Center in Makati City, will utilize upgraded traffic signal facilities in 85 priority intersections, 25 high-definition CCTV cameras, 36 units of 45-inch displays, and its own system management software. “It can analyze and consolidate information for faster mobility, improved road safety, optimized vehicle flow and pedestrian movement, and reduced travel times,” said MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino.

President Benigno Aquino III, who was present at the launch, gave an example on how the TSS will tackle heavy traffic. “Kung nakita sa CCTV camera na puno ng sasakyan sa isang kalsada, at maluwag naman sa kabila, maaaring kontrolin mula sa Command and Control Center ang tagal o bilis ng pag-ilaw ng green at red lights sa mga intersection, upang mapaluwag ang mga daan dahil magiging mas-efficient ang pagdaloy ng trapiko.”

The Traffic Signalization System (TSS) is currently at Phase 1 and costs more than Php295 million. The President is expecting the project to reach its final phase (Phase 3) in 2016.
