There’s been a rumor making its round in the web recently regarding Polaroid’s plan of unveiling an Android-powered camera. But Polaroid has a trick up its sleeve to differentiate itself from the other manufacturers who’ve already integrated Google’s platform to their respective cameras.
Dubbed as IM1836, this alleged compact camera is said to run on Ice Cream Sandwich and sports an 18MP sensor, 3.5-inch display and built-in flash. The IM1836 is also said to support wireless connection via WiFi, but it wasn’t mentioned if it’ll have cellular data option.
What’s so special about this camera though is, if the rumors are to be believed, that it’s probably the first Android-imbued mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. We’re not sure though if the IM1836 will join Olympus and Panasonic in the Micro Four-Thirds race or they’ll come up with their own proprietary mount.
An MILC running on Android is an interesting proposition, one that may boost Polaroid’s popularity again as one of the top players in the imaging industry if positioned properly. We only wish that Polaroid will price this competitively so as not to spoil its promising future. The Polaroid IM1836 is slated to make its first public debut in January at the Consumer Electronic Show.
