Philippine internet slowest in ASEAN, way below average

An infographic by ASEAN DNA claims to have recent data obtained between March and April 2014, and it compares the average internet speeds of countries around the world and those that are in the ASEAN. Results find that the Philippines is way below the average in Asia and in the whole world, and in the infographic, we are seen trailing as the slowest.

ASEAN INTERNET SPEED

Seen above, you can see that our average internet speed is at 3.6 mbps, while Singapore goes in at 61 mbps, topping everyone in the graph off. The average speeds of all the other ASEAN countries are at somewhere near 10 mbps while it’s at around 15 mbps globally.

If the Philippines continues at this pace, it seems that our internet speed will be truly left behind despite the expensive costs when compared to our neighboring countries.

List of smartphones with longest battery life

We all know that having a feature-packed smartphone means nothing if it has poor battery life that won’t last a day without being plugged in. If you’re out looking to upgrade your handset with great battery performance, you might want to check out this list of smartphones with the biggest batteries.

smartphones with longest battery life

The devices are ranked by FindTheBest according to their battery size and overall battery performance. As seen above, the phablet Samsung Galaxy Note 3 tops the chart with its 3200mAh battery despite its big display which should consume more juice. Falling in second place is LG G2 followed by the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4, with the iPhone 5s tailing the list.

One thing that we can conclude from this graph is that Android smartphones are better in conserving battery with its power-saving apps, both embedded and downloaded; and that battery performance from Windows and Apple phones are far cries compared to Android devices.

So again, if you’re on the prowl for a device that could work for long hours without the help of power banks then hopefully this graph would help.

Update: The source states that the data was derived not only from battery capacities but also from performance benchmarks that include specs of each device. Experiences from different testers were also taken into account.

* Data from manufacturer and carrier websites. Ratings from CNET, LAPTOP Mag, PC Mag, PC World, and WIRED. Performance benchmarks from Geekbench, DxOMark, and Rightware.

Samsung Galaxy S5 meets the Barrett M107A1

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has always been regarded as a toughie thanks to its resistance against water, shock and minor scratches. But these things are nothing compared what Richard Ryan aka the “Tech Assassin” did to Sammy’s flagship handset.

Screengrab from RatedRR’s video

Richard started out by giving us a quick overview of his gorgeous rifle and the Samsung Galaxy S5. He then proceeded to see if there’s any truth about its nature-ready features by dropping the phone from shoulder-height to a block of concrete and dropping it in an aquarium filled with water.

For the finale, he loaded his Barrett M107A1 with a .50-caliber round and aimed straightly at the Galaxy S5. And just like in all of his videos, Richard got all the gory details in slow-motion which is both excruciating (if you’re a handset lover) and fun to watch.

Well, it seems that the Samsung Galaxy S5 isn’t that tough after all, that and the other devices (like Google Glass 2.0 and the iPhone 5S) that suffered the same fate in the hands of the Tech Assassin. If you like to see more devices being devastated, you can check out Richard Ryan’s YouTube Channel in the link provided.

Viber, WeChat and Line dominate PH chat app

According to one source close to both Smart and Globe, the top mobile messaging apps in the Philippines is dominated by Viber, WeChat and Line.

There are so many messaging apps and services out there so we know it’s a fierce battle among the players — Skype, iMessage, GTalk, Kakaotalk, Voxer, Line, WeChat, Whatsapp, Viber, SnapChat, Telegram.

According to the source that gave us the numbers, Viber is on top with 35% of the base followed by WeChat at 30% and then Line at a little under 20%. Whatsapp is down to single digits and so is Kakaotalk which has recently been pumping a lot of money in ads and endorsements.

The market share above are based on the combined usages shared by both Globe and Smart so it’s not reflective of the total number of users but just a sample size (albeit a very big chunk of the sample size).

We thought we’d also put up a poll/survey asking people which chat apps they use more often (please pick your top 3):

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
