AGALON SANG KADUTAAN: Masters of the Land

AGALON SANG KADUTAAN, the title of this slideshow produced by veteran journalist and PCIJ multimedia producer Julius D. Mariveles, literally translates to Masters of the Land. If the title sounds so feudal, it is because the system really is.

AGALON SANG KADUTAAN is a collection of images and information about the people who till the volcanic land of Negros Occidental for their economic and political masters. The sacadas and dumaans, those who work the cane fields of Negros, are bound, not just to the soil, but to the whims and caprices of their AGALON. This feudal relationship easily transposes itself into the political arena, since the masters who hold the lives of the sugar workers in their hands have also used this economic power to build their political base.
The photos are from the portfolio of Mr. Mariveles, a 15-year veteran of print and radio journalism in Negros Occidental before he joined the PCIJ.

Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum Dragontrail Glass test

Looks like Cherry Mobile wants to prove that their Omega Spectrum is indeed packing a tough Dragontrail glass and has published a video on their Facebook page of it being tested.

The short video below shows the Omega Spectrum’s Dragontrail Glass being scratched and jabbed by sharp objects – pin, coin, metal ruler, cutter, and a pair of scissors. No drop test though.

There’s a healthy discussion going on in the comments section of our Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum VS MyPhone Agua Rio article. If you’re planning to buy any of these phones, be sure to check it out.

LG G3 confirmed with 2K WQHD display, but 640 DPI?

Sony, Samsung, and HTC have all unveiled their frontrunners and all that’s left from the big Android manufacturers is LG. The South Korean company has already confirmed that the soon-to-be-released LG G3 will in fact come with 2K display, but a benchmark photo shows the display to have 640dpi which is a bit unbelievable.

lg-g3-2560x1440-640dpi-display

The benchmarked smartphone above was reported 99.99% to be the LG G3, and it shows that the device will be running on Adreno 330 GPU side-by-side a Qualcomm processor so it’s just logical to assume it will be a Snapdragon 801. Partner those with its WQHD screen display and we have a flagship phone in our hands.

The thing that caught our attention, though, is that it has 640dpi which doesn’t makes sense if the device is 5.5 inches as expected. For a display to have 640dpi with 2560 x 1440 screen resolution, the screen size should be around 4.6 inches. Either this is a miscalculation or the display is really that small, but we’re going with the former on this one. For a 5.5-inch display, we’re looking at around 534 dots per inch.

For the arrival of the LG G3, release in June is still our best bet since a newer Snapdragon 805 processor is about to come in devices starting July.

Here’s a refreshed specs list that we could expect from the LG G3:

5.5-inch WQHD display @ 2560 x 1440 resolution
Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor
3GB RAM
32GB storage (expandable to 64GB via microSD)
13MP rear and 2.1MP front cameras
LTE/EVDO/IS2000
GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
Android 4.4.2 KitKat

PAL poised for US expansion, anticipates growth opportunities with lifting of ban

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is ready to implement an expansion plan in the United States, following the re-classification of the country’s aviation safety rating to Category 1, which it said would boost tourism and trade and open up new and exciting opportunities for the flag carrier.

With the upgrade, the Philippines now re-joins the ranks the most important aviation nations in the world, made up of select countries that meet the US’ strict standards of aviation safety.

Following the re-classification, the flag carrier said it is set to immediately deploy a fleet of newly – acquired Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for its long-haul flights to the US. With this, passengers can now enjoy non-stop flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco aboard new aircraft equipped with the most modern cabin and state-of the-art amenities, including lie-flat beds in business class.

PAL President & Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang said: “Your flag carrier welcomes the return of the country’s aviation rating to Category 1. This is a culmination of the government’s hard work, as exemplified by the efforts of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, to upgrade the country’s international aviation safety standards.”

“This latest development allows us to deploy our modern and fuel-efficient Boeing 777-300ER fleet to the US, and enables us to explore new destination opportunities in one of the Philippines’ largest passenger markets,” he added.

Currently, PAL operates a total of 26 weekly flights to the US, with frequencies to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam.

The flag carrier said it would deploy six Boeing 777-300ERs, amounting to US$1.2 billion, for US flights within a month’s time. For its flights to Honolulu and Guam, PAL will continue to utilize new wide body Airbus A330-300s and single-aisle A320-200s.

Apart from ushering a new era in the flag carrier’s trans-pacific service, Mr. Ang added that the upgrade will also allow PAL to explore possible airline partnerships with foreign carriers in order to maximize its growth potential.
