Hugo Barra responds to Xiaomi’s privacy issues

Hugo Barra, Vice President of Xiaomi Global, has published a Q&A on his Facebook page in response to online reports that the Xiaomi Redmi Note has been sending data to Chinese servers without the user’s permission.

According to Barra, the articles have “severely misinterpreted a discussion thread asking about the Redmi Note’s communication with a server in China.” He also stated that “MIUI does not secretly upload photos and text messages.

“MIUI requests public data from Xiaomi servers from time to time. These include data such as preset greeting messages (thousands of jokes, holiday greetings and poems) in the Messaging app and MIUI OTA update notifications, i.e. all non-personal data that does not infringe on user privacy.”

As to the question if Xiaomi uploads personal data without the user’s knowledge, his answer is no. Barra explains that Xiaomi offers a service called the Mi Cloud that enables the users to back up their data in the cloud. It’s turned off by default and can only be turned on manually. Strict encryption algorithms are also implemented to protect user privacy.

“Xiaomi is serious about user privacy and takes all possible steps to ensure our Internet services adhere to our privacy policy. We do not upload any personal information and data without the permission of users. In a globalized economy, Chinese manufacturers’ handsets are selling well internationally, and many international brands are similarly successful in China – any unlawful activity would be greatly detrimental to a company’s global expansion efforts.”

Lenovo Golden Warrior S8 (S898t+) specs:

5.3-inch Sharp LTPS display @ 1280 x 720 pixels with OGS technology and Gorilla 3 glass
1.4GHz MediaTek octa-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB storage (expandable via microSD)
12MP rear and 5MP front cameras
Dual-SIM
147 x 76.7 x 7.9mm

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

As of now the Golden Warrior S8 is reported to be a device of China Mobile and is compatible with the TD-SCDMA network of the carrier, but who knows as it might make its way to other countries including Philippines in the upcoming months.

Also, reports say there are possibilities of Lenovo releasing different variants of the S8. One variant could possibly be a WCDMA model if Xiaomi also comes up with it for its Redmi Note. Seems like Lenovo wouldn’t let Xiaomi get all the attention.

5.5-inch octa-core Xiaomi Redmi Note confirmed

Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi confirmed entering the phablet scene with the Redmi Note (Redmi‘s successor) which will be available for pre-orders in less than a week.

Redmi-Note

This confirmation came from a teaser picture from the company showing that the device features a spacious 5.5-inch display and would be open for bookings in China this coming March 19.

So far, known specs regarding the Xiaomi Redmi Note include:

5.5-inch display (720p resolution)
1.4GHz or 1.7GHz octa-core processor
13MP rear, 5MP front cameras

The company hasn’t revealed pricing as of yet, but instead they’re letting people guess and would give away 50 Redmi Notes for those who get the price tags right.

Xiaomi has been known to price their devices competitively. We remember how the Xiaomi Redmi, priced at $133 (approx. Php5,938), was sold out in Singapore in just 8 minutes — that kind of price point is what we’re looking forward to, here. Engadget predicts it will be around $160 (approx Php7,144).

We’re still waiting on the date as to when it will be available outside China.
