Also, if you have online storage apps on your PC or mobile device, you might want to disable automatic syncing. Big files will have a great impact on your data and most of the time, the automatic photo sync feature is to blame. In short, if you have limited bandwidth to spare, stay away from anything automatic.

1080p YouTube videos are a joy to watch but they consume about 35MB for a 10-minute playback. You might want to lower it down to 480p or even 360p. To avoid HD playback, you can set your YouTube account to “Never play higher-quality video” through the account settings. You might also want to disable automatic playback on Facebook because they can also slow down performance and quite annoying too. Local streaming is starting to get some traction lately, and they consume varying bandwidth. Good thing ISPs are providing a dedicated data allocation for their own streaming service.

Torrent, this is something capped subscriptions want us to avoid. Heck, this might be the sole reason why ISPs strictly enforce throttling for abusive users. A 1080p YIFY movie with a TRT of an hour and a half usually weighs around 1.5GB, that’s already above the local ISPs Fair Use Policy (FUP) limit of 800MB to 1GB/day. If you rely on mobile broadband for downloading, you’re better off in looking for a coffee shop with decent Wi-Fi, and hoping it’s free. Globe’s current Tattoo Home Broadband wired plans are also limited by having data caps as low as 50GB for 3Mbps.

5. Secure your Wi-Fi

Yes, your neighbor might be stealing your bandwidth especially when they have visited you and asked for the password during a get together. Make it a habit of securing your home network by changing your password from time to time. If possible, you can use your router’s guest SSID feature to monitor connections when you have visitors at home. Being strict with your Wi-Fi network doesn’t harm anyone.

Li-Fi is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi in transmitting data

A new wireless technology has just been taken and tested out of the lab which has been reported to be able to transmit data as fast as 1GB per second — about a hundred times faster against our standards for today’s Wi-Fi speeds.

Li-Fi is able to send this much data by using VLC technology (visible light communication, not the media player software). It was invented in 2011 by Herald Haas after being able to send significant amounts of data from simply flickering a single LED compared to what a cellular tower could transmit. Back then, he was able to record a chart-topping 224 gigabits per second of data. For comparison, ScienceAlert puts it as downloading 18 movies of 1.5GB each every second.

“Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the Internet in their office space.”

And now this same principle was used in offices as an initial trial in real-life situations. Haas mentions that all that needs to be done is to place a microchip to every potential illumination device and this would give it dual functionalities — illumination and wireless data transfer.

By rapidly flicking these specially-designed LEDs on and off, it could send specific messages in binary code that could then be retrieved and decoded by devices. Rest assured that these flickering of light is done at extreme speeds that make it invisible to the human eye.

If the tests continue to succeed, there’s a bright chance (pun intended) that we’ll be using LEDs not only to light up our homes but also to connect to the Internet.

Google announces OnHub Wi-Fi router

With all the hassle of setting up your Internet router — from routing the cables to establishing a working connection, it’s not really an exciting task whenever you get a new one. Google aims to minimize that by announcing the OnHub Wi-Fi router that aims to provide a really easy solution in setting up a connection at home.

Partnering with TP-Link, the OnHub router has a tall, cylindrical design which is designed not to be hidden behind TVs or down on the floor where signal interference is common. By making it look attractive, Google aims for users to position the device somewhere without obstruction that would yield better performance.

The device has 13 antennas — 12 of which for signal and one for checking the strength of the signal within the area. According to the company, here’s how OnHub works during installation:

“OnHub searches the airwaves and selects the best channel for the fastest connection. A unique antenna design and smart software keep working in the background, automatically adjusting OnHub to avoid interference and keep your network at peak performance. You can even prioritize a device, so that your most important activity — like streaming your favorite show — gets the fastest speed.”

To help in setting up and managing your Wi-Fi, there is a dedicated app called Google On that shows some important details like how much bandwidth is being used up by the devices and at the same time troubleshoots issues with the Wi-Fi.

OnHub is in an exclusive partership with TP-Link..for now. Google says it will also be producing their routers with ASUS as their second partner soon, so watch out for that. The Google OnHub is already available for pre-order for $199.
