LUV Power Land All-in-One AC Power Charger

There are so many portable batteries for smartphones and tablets out there but this is the first time we’ve actually seen one that incorporates an AC wall charger right into the body. The LUV Power Land has just that feature.

One of the more common scenarios with the normal portable batteries is that we keep on forgetting to recharge it once in a while. On occasion, I would find myself with a couple of drained up batteries on a trip.

What the LUV Power Land hopes to achieve is skip the part where you forget to re-charge the batteries because you’ll always use the device as a wall charger. That means you’re charging the battery at the same time you plug your phone or tablet in your wall socket.

The package also comes with several socket adapter so you’ll be ready when you bring it to international travel. There’s also a few USB adapters for various smartphones an tablets (although the one for Apple is still the old one).

The Li-Ion battery has 2600mAh battery which isn’t really that huge but should be more than enough for a single fill of most of the flagship smartphones in the market like the iPhone 5, Galaxy S3, HTC One X+.

The LUV Power Land All-in-One AC Power Charger retails for about Php3,000 in local stores (Switch, A Store, iStudio and Travel Club). Comes in a variety of two-tone colors like green-white and black-orange.

One thumb drive to rule them all

Wouldn’t be cool if all of your files, including all your movie and song collections, are stored in a keychain-sized thumb drive? Well, if money isn’t a big deal to you, then Kingston might just have what you’re looking for. Folks, meet the world’s first 1TB thumb drive – the DataTraveler HyperX Predator 3.0.

Apart from being the world’s largest-capacity USB 3.0 flash drive, Kingston recently announced storage solution is also a speed demon reaching transfer speeds up to 240Mbps and 160Mbps write-speed. According to Kingston, its mammoth capacity and incredible speed allows users to view/edit large files straight from the thumb drive.

DataTraveller HyperX Predator

However, the colossal capacity and blazing fast read/write speed isn’t the only thing that’s insane about the DataTraveler HyperX Predator. The 512GB version of this Zinc alloy-enclosed thumb drive can be had for a bank-breaking USD1,750. Just imagine how much its 1TB brethren will cost once it debuts on the latter part of this quarter.

Razer showcases Edge aka Project Fiona

It was at last year’s CES when Razer revealed their plans of making a Windows-based gaming tablet. At this year’s convention, they unveiled their latest creation; the world’s first crowd-sourced gaming tablet which was only previously known as Project Fiona, but not now goes by the name of Edge.

Back in December, the CEO of the company has posted what their fans can expect from their upcoming slate in terms of its specs. There were some aspects of the tablet that was yet to be revealed back then, but now they go all out and, not so surprisingly, the end result was close to what Min-Liang Tan has leaked.

Razer Edge

The Razer Edge will come in two configurations; Standard and Pro. Here’s the how the spec sheet looks like for the Pro version.

Razer Edge Pro specs:
10.1” Capacitive IPS display, 1366×768 @155.16ppi
1.9GHz Intel Core i7 dual-core processor w/ Hyper Threading
Intel HD 4000 on-board GPU
NVidia GeForce GT 640M LE dedicated GPU w/ 2GB DDR3 VRAM
8GB DDR3 RAM (2x 2GB 1600MHz RAM)
128GB or 256GB SSD
2MP Front-facing camera
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
Dolby Home Theater v4
1x USB 3.0, m-HDMI out, Audio Jack and Microphone

Razer has not yet shared the pricing for the Edge Pro, but judging from its configuration, we’re expecting its price to be pegged around USD1,400 – USD1,600. If you’re aiming for a cheaper alternative, you might want to opt for the Standard which is said to retail for little under a grand (USD999). However, because the standard is cheaper, the internals are a bit modest compared to the Pro.

Razer Edge Standard specs:
10.1” Capacitive IPS display, 1366×768 @155.16ppi
1.7GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor w/ Hyper Threading
Intel HD 4000 on-board GPU
NVidia GeForce GT 640M dedicated GPU w/ 1GB DDR3 VRAM
4GB DDR3 RAM (2x 2GB 1600MHz RAM)
68GB SSD
2MP Front-facing camera
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
Dolby Home Theater v4
1x USB 3.0, m-HDMI out, Audio Jack and Microphone

Note that the only significant differences between the two models are the GPU, RAM and Dedicated GPU, everything else is virtually identical. These Razer Edges are destined for shipping this quarter and hopefully it won’t be long before it make its local debut.

Project Fiona

Along with the announcement of the Razer Edge, the company also unveiled three accessories to complement their brainchild. This includes the detachable controller (USD249), Entertainment Dockins Station (USD99), 40Whr Extended Battery (USD69) which, by the way, can be connected to either the controller or the upcoming keyboard dock which is slated for debut on the second quarter of the year.

HMDX Jam Bluetooth Wireless Speakers

This is the first time we’ve seen or heard about HMDX so when we got this portable speakers, we were very curious if it’s just one of those ones you normally in stores. Turns out this HMDX Jam is something else.

The portable speakers come in this glass jar which is probably the reason they called it the HMDX Jam. At first, I thought the jar was actually part of the speaker set but it’s only the packaging.

Once you take the speakers out of the jar, you get a tube-like device with grills right on the top section. The only accessory that came with it is a very short USB cable that allow you to recharge the built-in Li-Ion battery of the HMDX Jam.

At the lower corner of the base of the speaker are the controls — pause/play, volume control and Bluetooth pairing. At the bottom and is where the power switch is located. Pairing with a smartphone or media player is really quick and easy via Bluetooth.

The device itself is small and compact, has a nice polished look with two tones of gray. The speaker is actually heavy for its size, giving you the impression that its got a huge magnetic coil inside to power it.

As for the sound quality, it’s more than decent. We can even say it’s actually good from low to mid volumes. However, once you crank up the volume to the top, you’ll definitely hear some distortion (almost trashy at times but that’s expected with a lot of speakers in this category). Not a lot of bass here but if you place it on a solid surface, the vibrations will simulate a little bit of oomph.

When using wireless Bluetooth for streaming, you have a estimated maximum 30 feet although we don’t think the quality of audio will be any good due to interference. Battery life is around 4 hours on a single full charge. There’s line-in port if you want to hook up directly to a media player (lasts up to 12 hours this way compared to wireless).

Over-all, the HMDX Audio HX-P230PU Jam is a pretty sleek wireless speakers. For a portable speaker, I liked the size and design. The sound quality is pretty good. I just wish they micro-USB cable charger were a bit longer. The only downside is the price — at Php3,495 I think it’s already on the pricey end (although if you have access to Amazon, you can get it for only $40 which is a bargain).

They’re available in Egghead stores in Rustans and Anson’s Emporium. There are about 6 different color variants but we’re not sure if they carry all of them.

Acer unveils a wallet-friendly 7-incher

There aren’t a lot of tablets that are being showcased in this year’s CES. Acer sees this as an opportunity to take the spotlight (or at least some of it) and point it towards their affordable creation, the Iconia Tab B1-A71.

If not for the company’s logo on the top of the tablet (when held vertically), Acer’s new 7-inch tablet can easily be mistaken for an average generic slate because of its modest specs. This includes a 1.2GHz dual-core processor made by MediaTek which is paired with 512MB RAM.

Iconia Tab B1-A71

The Iconia Tab B1-A71 will feature an expandable 8GB internal storage and will run on Android Jelly bean (4.1.x) out of the box. Although the availability date remains to be announced, this meagerly spec’d tablet is said to retail for under USD150 according to Acer.
