COVA tapas y sangria, Jupiter St.

I still savor the memory of the most magnificent meal I had last week. Spanish food is something I don’t eat everyday and when I do, am reminded of my dream to be in Barcelona, imbibing good food, wine and music. Glad I don’t have to go too far because there’s Cova Tapas Y Sangria in Jupiter St., Makati.

Cova, Makati

Just in case you wonder why the picture looks like the one above, Cova means cave in Spanish. Am certainly impressed by the artisan workers who cut and carved pieces of wood to achieve the restaurant’s look.

The ambiance at Cova is ideal for intimate gatherings with friends (hence, it often comes alive at night) but the food is simply to die-for, not to mention reasonably priced. It was nice to be acquainted with the Cap I Pota, a stew similar to callos that’s composed of uber-tender wagyu cheeks, ox tripe, jamon & blood sausage, among other heavenly things. There was flavor in every bite!

Cova Tapas Y Sangria

Because it’s a Spanish restaurant, expect only the best paella. They have a version of paella negra which has a topping of assorted delectable seafood, including soft shell crabs. A serving costs P900, good for 3-4 persons.

Paella negra @ Cova

Something I didn’t know: the Spanish have a paella that consists of noodles instead of rice. It’s called Fideus (P650) and has toppings of squid, clams and the house’s own delicious alioli.

Cova Tapas y Sangria

A house bestseller is the huevos cabreados (P299). If you love French fries, level up your taste with this Cova specialty of oh-so-crisp, deep fried shoestring potatoes topped with fried egg, chorizo and alioli or garlic mayonnaise sauce.

Cova Tapas y Sangria

The cochinillo or baby lechon is still to be placed in Cova’s official menu and we were glad to be among the first to try it.One word: heaven! As you can see. Pork is perfectly golden… order this on your next big celebration at Cova

We were also served a few pitchers of their sangria that night and I believe I only managed a few sips as I was driving later on. But I promise to enjoy their bar offerings next time. The large selection on display is simply too tempting :)

COVA is now open for lunch! Have a fill of their Spanish specialties for only P299-499 per head. On offer are such well-loved dishes as lengua con setas, cap i pota, arroz de gambas, fish & chips & US tenderloin steak frites.

Tonkatsuya BF Homes opening on Nov. 8!

Yes fellow neighbors from the South… that’s tomorrow already. Check out this authentic tonkatsu place spearheaded by a Japanese chef on 252 Aguirre Avenue in BF Homes, Paranaque City (in front of Songkran).

I was certainly giddy with excitement when I saw the place being set up along Aguirre a month ago. Tonkatsuya is one of the restaurants on my must go-to list, but I couldn’t seem to find the time to go to their original location in San Antonio Village Makati (not to mention, I heard parking there sucks!)

Tonkatsuya BF Homes

The stars must have been aligned because I was invited to their pre-opening party last Monday. I finally got to try their much-talked about tonkatsu and other dishes. Food was served buffet-style (not a la carte, as what happens when they formally open) but at least now I have an idea why foodies are proclaiming why their food is one of the best in its category in Manila.

Tonkatsuya

The tonkatsu had the perfect crunch which wasn’t overwhelmed by the delicate breading. The cabbage greens that went with it were the crispiest. But I have to say that I really am more of a chicken than a pork lover and the chicken karaage just blew me away.It was tender and tasty, inside and out. Nomnomnom fried chicken!

I love how homey the BF location is with its ceiling fans, LCD TVs and interiors that don’t scream ZEN too much. The place seats 60 people and it’s comfy enough for you to dine in or swap stories over Asahi beer with friends.

Tonkatsuya BF Homes

Here’s one strange tidbit I learned.Tonkatsuya has been existing in Makati for five years, until recently when it got much-needed raves from the foodie community. Its proprietor Chef Hosoya (who’s got a Filipina wife) has been approached by a number of people for a franchise, so much so that he finally granted a “franchise” to his close circle of friends, not strangers as he doesn’t want his resto to be too commercialized. The chef said he wants to retain the authentic Japanese taste and also to keep prices reasonable (tonkatsu sets in the resto are only P200++)

So yes, the two gracious ladies to the leftmost of this picture are the lucky ones to own/manage the BF location – Joanne Blanca and Pian Jean Go. They’re shown here with Chef Hosoya and his wife.

Watch out also for Tonkatsuya Rockwell opening soon!

Smart C – nutrients in juice form

I was glad to get my replenishment of this power juice when Angie sent me this package a few days ago. It had the days of the week written on it so I won’t ever forget :) Choose your fancy from the different Smart C+ fruit drink flavors – Lemon Squeeze, Orange Crush, Pomelo Grapefruit.

smart C

A few things to love about Smart C+ – it is reasonably priced so we can get our fill of nutrients at no heavy cost. It’s also accessible – with the wide distribution of Oishi, its manufacturer, we can easily find them in grocery or even sari-sari stores. Plus, don’t you just love the convenience of having the equivalent of 11 lemons or eight oranges in one 500 ml. bottle?

Now that weather in the city is shifting from hot to cold (with rains in between), the more we need to be proactive in bolstering our immune system. Vitamin C (which Smart C has lots of) enables our body to produce collagen, a protein connecting the tissues and supports our skin, bone and muscles, thus providing the body strength and resilience in fighting the daily wear & tear brought about by an active lifestyle.

Plus, it has the added advantage of having no added preservatives, artificial coloring or artificial sweeteners.

The newest endorser of Smart C+ is the hotshot engineer of Cebu and Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited winner Slater Young. He makes the perfect choice because he has the unique combination of dashing good looks, talent, intelligence and energy to take on an active lifestyle. I guess we can all drink Smart C and be cute like Slater XD
