Intel Intros Five Broadwell Desktop Processors

In addition to the four new 5th Generation mobile processors, Intel also announced five new desktop SKUs under the Broadwell which includes two Core i7 chips and three Core i5 processors.

Instead of using the usual ‘K’ to denote unlocked processors, Intel uses ‘C’ on the two new overclock-able SKUs. The chipmaker did, however, retains the use of ‘R’ nomenclature for the new soldered processors under the Broadwell lineup.

All of the new desktop processors that Intel launched are based on the chipmaker’s 14nm process. These new SKUs share the same integrated GPU (Intel Iris Pro 6200) and same TDP rated at 65W.

As part of the package, both the CPU and iGPU can take advantage of the Intel Crystal Well – a 128MB eDRAM integrated on the processor die that acts as an L4 Cache.

These new 5th Generation desktop SKUs are expected to be released in the market within a month or two. Users who are planning to upgrade to any of these new processors should be happy to know that all of these chips are compatible with existing Intel 9 Series motherboards.

Intel Debuts New 5th Generation Mobile Processors

Along with the official announcement of Thunderbolt 3, Intel also debuted the last batch of mobile processors under the Broadwell lineup which consists of three new Intel Core i7 processors and a dual-core Intel Core i5 chip.

The announcement of these new Broadwell-H processors came five months after Intel announced the Broadwell-U earlier this year.

There are actually five (5) processors that were launched during the event, but we excluded the Intel Core i7-5700HQ from our list because it had already made its way to some high-end notebooks prior to the announcement.

Broadwell lineup

All of the newly-launched Broadwell mobile processors are equipped with an Intel Iris Pro 6200 iGPU, albeit with varying base frequency. These new 5th Gen SKUs also share the same TDP which is rated at 47W, noticeably higher than any of the mobile processor that Intel launched back in January.

Lastly, all of these new chips (excluding the i7-5700HQ) are also embedded with an Intel Crystal Well (Crystalwell), a 128MB embedded RAM (eDRAM) that is referred to by the chipmaker as L4 Cache that is accessible by both the CPU and the GPU.

Intel expects notebook PCs with the new 5th Generation Intel Core mobile processors to start popping out in the next month or two.

Intel Announces Thunderbolt 3

Thunderbolt has been around for a while now, but despite of the performance gains that it’s touted to bring to the table, it has yet to even scratch the surface of USB’s popularity in the mainstream segment. Intel is looking to change that though, and fast, with the announcement of Thunderbolt 3 which will feature a USB Type-C connector.

Thunderbolt 3 is what Intel envisioned all along: a multi-purpose hardware interface that delivers cutting-edge performance and versatility with cross-platform compatibility of USB standards. Unfortunately, the early versions of Thunderbolt didn’t play nicely with the USB standards at the time which resulted to the use of mini-DisplayPort interface instead.

That all changed with the introduction of USB Type-C which supports faster transfer speeds and, more importantly, better and bi-directional power delivery. Intel saw the opportunity to integrate its own technology to the new USB standard which gave birth to Thunderbolt 3.

thunderbolt 3 speed

Intel didn’t just stop with the use of the USB Type-C’s new reversible connector. Thunderbolt has received significant improvements on all fronts which include two-times faster transfer speed (from 20Gbps to 40Gbps), the ability to simultaneously drive two (2) external 4K monitors, up to 100-watt of USB power delivery for faster charging, and 10Gb Ethernet connection.

thunderbolt3

In order to reach the claimed 40Gbps bandwidth, Intel will be releasing two new active cables (optical and copper) for the new Thunderbolt 3 standard. A cheaper Thunderbolt 3 cable will also be available alongside the two high-performance (and definitely pricier) active cables but will only be able to reach 20Gbps bandwidth.

Lastly, Intel will be releasing the Thunderbolt 3’s new controller called Alpine Ridge which will integrate all the benefits of USB 3.1 host controller has to offer plus all the claimed improvements of Thunderbolt 3 listed above.

The first wave of devices with Thunderbolt 3 are expected to hit the market later this year. More devices are expected to make its way in 2016, in time for the release Skylake processors which will support the Alpine Ridge controller.
