Huawei Honor 4X in the Flesh, First Impressions

One can make the argument that the Huawei Honor 4X was rather late for the party as it was only locally launched last week after being out in other markets since October of last year. But Huawei Philippines is hoping that the handset’s note-worthy specs, combined with competitive local SRP will make up for lost time and win over consumers who are looking for a decent smartphone with sub-Php9k price tag.

The Huawei Honor 4X was launched alongside the Honor 6 Plus and Honor 4C, and is currently being sold locally for Php8,990. It features a 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution and runs on a 1.2Ghz HiSilicon Kirin 620 octa-core processor with 2GB of RAM and an expandable 8GB internal storage.

Unlike with the Honor 6 Plus, Huawei went for a more straightforward approach in designing the Honor 4X. The company eschews the classy and sophisticated look and have gone with a practical feel with the Honor 4X with an almost all-plastic body and three capacitive buttons instead of on-screen keys.

Most of the external components are where they’re supposed to be: audio jack at the top, microUSB port at the bottom and volume rocker at the right flank neighbored by the power button which has a different color to make it easier to differentiate one from the other.

With the exception of the 13-megapixel camera at the back with its accompanying LED flash unit, the back panel of the Honor 4X is devoid of other components. The loudspeaker, which is oftentimes placed at the lower section of the back panel, is moved at the bottom of the handset, neighboring the microUSB port.

The two SIM card slots, as well as the MicroSD slot, can be accessed by removing the plastic back panel. The back cover is textured on the outside to add a little flavor to the handset, and at the same makes the Honor 4X easier to hold because of the traction it provides.

Despite the all-plastic build, the Honor 4X feels well put together and fits our hand quite nicely. The buttons are thoughtfully placed to be easily reached by our thumb and the textured back panel prevents the phone from slipping from our hands when we’re holding it.
