Google Philippines formally opens local office

Google Philippines has formally opened their local office today and announced their first country manager, a position that’s been open since mid-2011.

The Country Manager for the Philippines position was posted in July 2011 but the assignment was based in Singapore. In 2012, they were able to find a candidate (Narciso Reyes, formerly of AdMax/Komli Ad Network) and by late last year, they’ve built a team to operate the local office.

The Philippine office is the 5th office in South East Asia where Google has local presence.

The local team is composed of veteran folks from Yahoo! Philippines, Rappler.com, and Ogilvy PR (for several months now, we’ve been hearing feedback from a lot of people that Google was massively hiring a local team).

The job openings/vacancies is mostly in sales, support and probably corporate communications as well. No development team, no editors or product managers (if you’re wishing for a local Nexus roll-out/subsidy, sorry).

Google Philippines will mainly focus on users, localization and advertisers. Most especially the latter (that’s Google Adwords, Adsense and DoubleClick for Publishers).

Check out our story on “What to expect from the Google Philippines Office“.

Update: Ooops! That was the office address of their PR agency, Team Asia.

Google updates Search for Android, adds Sound Search

Google has just enhanced their Search app by integrating Sound Search for Google Play feature that allows the app to provide relevant results based on the rhythm it tuned in to.

Sound Search for Google Play works similarly to other third party app such as SoundHound and Shazam. For those of you who’ve not used such app, we suggest reading our SoundHound review here to give you an overview on how music discovery app works.

SoundSearch

However, unlike SoundHound (or other Music Discovery app for that matter), Sound Search for Google Play is limited to Android users in the US and will only provide song results that are included on its extensive Google Play music library.

We hope that Google brings this feature out of their homeland in the future, but while we’re waiting for that to happen, you can always opt for other third party apps similar to it.

Google Maps for the iPhone now available

For those who are itching to get a reliable Maps application for their iPhone, the long wait is now over as the official Google Maps app is already available for download on the App Store.

Google Maps

Google took a while to get their Maps app out but it’s certainly worth the wait. The app itself is rebuilt from the ground up for the iPhone and not just some web-based version. Below are the main features:

Search
* Find addresses, places and businesses around the world with Google local search.
* Discover places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and local reviews.
* Sign in to sync your searches, directions, and favorite places between your computer and your phone.

Directions
* Get voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions.
* Find your way by train, bus, subway or walking directions.
* Access live traffic information in cities across the world.

Street View and imagery
* View 360-degree panoramas of places around the globe with Street View.
* See inside more than 100,000 businesses worldwide.
* View high resolution satellite imagery of locations around the world.

Simple and easy to use
* An entirely new Google Maps experience on your iPhone.
* Newly designed and streamlined interface for even easier navigation of your world.
* Use gestures to explore the map and browse results.

Currently, the Google Maps app is only available for the iPhone. Hopefully, the iPad version will arrive soon.

Google Now for Chrome in the works

One of the issues under Chromium Code Reviews suggests that search giant is planning to bring the Google Now to Chrome browser for desktop.

For the benefit of those who don’t have an idea about Google Now (either has not used an Android phone or has used a handset but is running on an older version of Android), it’s actually a virtual assistant which gives users relevant and timely information based on the usual things they search on Google, their location and even habits.

GoogleNow

Therefore, the more a person uses the device to search, the more the app knows about that person which then allows Google Now to come up with more relevant information to the user via Cards.

Cards, as the name implies, is basically just a card showing pertinent information/image/video/map about the search. So rather than just reading a bunch of words about something, Google Now presents it in such a way that it gives you better overview about the query through Cards.

Google is trying to apply the same ideology to Chrome browsers as suggested by Issue 11412291 which is titled Creating a skeleton for Google Now for Chrome implementation. We’re not sure though if Google Now will only be available on Chromebooks or Google will port it across all Chrome Browsers. One thing’s for sure, if the company successfully ports Google Now to Chrome across different platforms, it would certainly be a treat to most Chrome users and would give the browser an edge against its competition.
