‘Yung remaining 7 percent, ‘yan ‘yung mahirap pasukin like ‘yung Turtle Island, but we will look for other solutions for them — DOST Undersecretary Louis Napoleon Casambre to ABS-CBN News

Once fully implemented, it will be subjected to data volume based Fair Usage Policy to promote an equitable distribution of the public service. The daily data usage is set to 50MB to manage the estimated 117,000 internet users who will access the free WiFi service across the country.

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office has asked for a P3.2 billion budget for 2017 to fund and complete this project.

The promo gives away two free rides worth Php300 each to Metro Manila-based subscribers who are also first-time users of the Uber app. To avail of this exclusive treat, just head over to their website and register your Smart number. After which you will receive a confirmation message together with a promo code that you can use on the Uber app right before booking a ride.

Once inside the vehicle you will be treated to an available Wi-Fi hotspot powered by Smart so you can either work or pass the time browsing online while on your way to your destination. It’s important to note that this Wi-Fi service will only be initially available in select Uber Black vehicles, with their other cars following suit “over the next few months”.

This service is limited to Metro Manila only and the special free ride promo will last until September 30, 2015.

DOST to put up 50,000 Free Public WiFi starting 2015

The Department of Science and Technology is looking to set up over 50,000 free public WiFi hotspots nationwide. This is based on their proposed budget of Php3 billion for next fiscal year.

The initial roll-out will start in 2015 and will include thousands of public school buildings, hospitals and medical centers, government structures and public spaces including the whole MRT, LRT, airports, sea ports and train stations (PNR).

DOST’s Public WiFi Program initially had a proposed budget of Php338 million but this was later increased to Php3 billion.

This project is perhaps the closest we’ve seen to that controversial NBN-ZTE National Broadband Project back in 2007 {read more}.
