I have been following another case that involved a failed delivery of a letter.

The issue is about copyright, an artist’s protection for his or her creations.

Dennis Garcia of the much-loved Hotdog band wrote that over a week ago, his group was about to close a lucrative deal with a reputable casino group and it involved the use of iconic “Manila”, the song that he and his brother,Rene,created.

The song “Manila” has become an anthem by Filipinos, especially those who have spread out to different parts of the world.

It expresses the Filipino brand of patriotism:

Hinahanap hanap kita Manila
Ang ingay mong kay sarap sa tenga
Mga jeepney mong nagliliparan
Mga babae mong naggagandahan

Dennis wrote that ‘”Sadly, the deal fell through because the prospective client found out that the lyrics of the song “Manila” was emblazoned on the casino floor of a competitive establishment.”

It was in Resort’s World that a poster with the lyrics of the song ”Manila” was used.

Last June 19, Dennis wrote Resorts World ( Kingson U. Sian, president and Stephen Reilly, chief operating officer) calling their attention to their having used “a copyrighted material for the longest time without permission, without attribution, without remuneration, and with the least concern.”

“You have arbitrarily pirated the lyrics and – via a billboard – made the endearing words the centerpiece of your casino area .This shows your utter disrespect and disregard for Filipino artists and musicians… and their work/source of income.”

Dennis, wrote in his widely-read blog,Chubibo, (his column in Abante is also under the same title) that the COO wrote him a letter which he read but didn’t formally receive.

He found the contents of the letter insulting because it said something like “it was just a framed piece… a temporary installation to cover a gaping hole in the wall… we can bring it down if you want.”

Dennis fumed: “Pinaghirapan naming isulat at pasikatin yan… at gagawin mo lang panakip-butas ng dingding.”

To make matters worse, the lawyers got into the picture. Last June 27, Attorneys Ma. Georgina A. Alvarez,chief legal officer and Walter L. Mactal, director for Litigation, wrote Dennis threatening him of “civil, criminal and administrative” actions if he did not retract what he wrote about Resorts World COO and ceased publishing “malicious” and “false” statements.

They also demanded that Dennis issue a public apology to the COO and to the “general public.”

These lawyers come from a different world.

I called up Resorts World. I was referred to Owen L. Cammayo,director for Corporate Communications.
Here’s the statement Cammayo released:

“Resorts World Manila (RWM) reiterates the sincere apologies extended to Mr. Dennis Garcia. Upon receipt of Mr. Garcia’s notice, the questioned material containing a portion of the lyrics of one of his most famous songs was immediately taken down. As a long-time supporter of the Filipino talent, the organization has nothing but the highest respects for Mr. Garcia’s artistic works and to him as a major contributor to the local music industry. RWM has reached out to Mr. Garcia and remains open to discuss this matter directly with him for its prompt resolution.”

No stranger to the stage, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson of the premier vocal group, The Company, joins the Barangay Venizia of the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA)-Rak of Aegis as Kapitana Mary Jane. Having been immersed in the performing arts industry for 22 years, she fits right in with the talented cast of Rak of Aegis.

Known for her resonating vocals and commanding stage presence, Sweet has proven to be an ultimate performer having worked on and off stage for a number of prestigious theater companies such as TRUMPETS, 9Works Theatricals, and Tanghalang Pilipino where she started her theatrical career.

Aside from her impressive acting and musical theater credits, Sweet is also a revered voice coach and musical theater teacher having passed on her skills to the students of the University of Asia and the Pacific and currently, the Meridian International College (MINT) in McKinley.

Sweet has kept the ball rolling career-wise since 2013 as she kicked it off with a role as the Wicked Stepmom in Cinderella the Musical at the Newport Performing Arts Theater where she received rave reviews. In the same year, she was nominated at the 2013 Gawad Buhay as the Best Musical Director for her notable work in 9Works Theatrical’s GREASE. Continuing her winning musical streak, she nabbed the award for the Best Ensemble Performance and Best Children’s Musical for TRUMPETS’ the Blue Bird of Happiness. In 2014, she took on the job of musical director for 9Works Theatricals’ La Cage Aux Folles which received positive reviews from several critics.

For 2015, Sweet gears up for another adventure as she takes on the role of Kapitana Mary Jane of the beloved Brgy. Venizia in PETA’s Rak of Aegis. Having watched it twice, Sweet is a self-proclaimed fan of the production.

“Nakita ko talaga ang sarili ko sa production”, she further explains when asked about her first Rak experience. She says that she has waited for the opportunity of being part of the Rak family since the beginning. When she had gotten the call to audition, she was ecstatic about taking on the challenge.

Originally aspiring for the role of Mercy (Aileen’s mother), Sweet was surprised that she had managed to grab the role of the strong Kapitana. “I feel like MJ’s voice should be bigger and alto, and I’m a soprano,” Sweet articulates when asked about the challenges of the role. She continues that although she perceives this as a challenge, she remains positive as she trusts in the process of Director Maribel Legarda, and the entire cast.
Sweet is really optimistic that she will be able to put in a different twist to the character of Mary Jane. She is currently enjoying her rehearsals with the Rak family saying that it feels that they have been working together already for the longest time.

Aside from theater, Sweet has also just recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of top vocal ensemble, The Company, last June 13 at the Solaire Theater.

Movies Filipinos can relate to in French Film Festival

In the movie “La Famille Bélier,” which is one of the featured movies in the ongoing 20th French Film Festival, there’s an election campaign because the father of the main character was running against the incumbent mayor.

Filipinos, who loves election campaigns, should be able to identify with the movie especially when the mayor was trying to look down on his opponent who was a deaf dairy farmer.

The mayor condescendingly asked Paula, the farmer’s 16-year old daughter who can hear and speak, if they really think anyone will vote for a deaf person for mayor, the young girl replied: “Well, they did vote for an asshole.”

That was a good one.

The movie centered on the dilemma of Paula when she was discovered by the music teacher to have the potential for a singing career which required her to go to Paris. Since she was the only hearing and speaking person in the family (her mother and brother are also deaf), she does a lot of translation for them as well as dealing with customers and suppliers.

She was torn between leaving the family in rural Normandy and going to Paris to study. It didn’t help that her parents were caught off-balance by the prospect of life without her.

The audition scene was so touching. After the movie, there were not a few moist eyes in the audience.
This is the kind of movies that make the French Film Festival a much awaited event for those who love good movies.

Credit should go to the one in charge of choosing the kind of movies to be shown during the festival. Is it Audiovisual Attaché Martin Macalintal?

Ambassador Gilles Garachon said, “French films tell everyday stories inspired by human experiences and relationships –stories that anybody can easily relate to.”

He said the movies they bring for the festival are “by some of the most revered film directors and brought to life by exceptional actors and actresses.”

As a special feature, Brillante Mendoza’s Taklub starring Nora Aunor was also shown during the opening day last Wednesday.

Taklub, which was made through the efforts of Sen. Loren Legarda and supported by the Communications Operations Office-Philippine Information Agency (PCOO-PIA), tells of how survivors of typhoon Yolanda “survive” post –tragedy challenges.

Legarda said, “You will see the creative genius of an artist mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction and climate change adaptation in a feature film. The way the story was told was not direct. There’s so much symbolism and it is very touching.”

Taklub is the kind of movie that you need a few moments to recover at the end of the film. It will leave an impact one the viewer.

And yes, it will it is something that enriches one’s soul.

Taklub received special citation from the 2015 Ecumenical Jury at the recent 68th Cannes Film Festival. It would not be easy to get it out of your mind.

There are two or three more that I’d like to watch: Saint Laurent, a biopic of the famous French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent; “Diplomatie,” that centers on a Swiss diplomat during the WWII; and “Timbuktu,” and “Timbuktu,” a movie about the effect of foreign occupation of a country.

Participating theaters in the festival are Greenbelt and Bonifacio High Street. It ends on Tuesday, June 9.

An abundance of Filipino talent in Asia’s Got Talent

I hope and pray that since the Philippines is blessed with so many artistic talent, we will also have enough votes to make one of them be declared the winner of this year’s “Asia’s Got Talent”, which will have its grand finals on Thursday.

To be held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, it will be aired on AXN at 8:05 p.m.

Four of the nine finalists are from the Philippines: El Gamma Penumbra, shadow players; Junior New System, dancers; Gerphil Flores, singer; and Gwyneth Dorado, singer.

We have an abundance of talent!

I have voted for El Gamma Penumbra, shadow play group from Batangas.
El Gamma Penumbra is amazing. The fact that their performances always deliver a relevant message makes them more worthy to win.

Last week’s performance about mankind bearing the wrath of nature was so meaningful with the recent earthquake in Nepal and our own tragedy with super typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

Indonesian rock star Anggun congratulated them for the kind of art that they pursue: “Our job as entertainers, we are here to entertain people, but if you can — if we can raise — awareness on subjects that really, really matter, then that makes our jobs more noble.”

Gerphil Flores’ inclusion in Asia’s Got Talent finals is a slap in the face of Kris Aquino and Ai-Ai de las Alas, who insulted her and the Filipino audience when she joined the ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010. The culture illiterate duo told Gerphil that her singing cannot be appreciated by the Filipino audience.
The video of that episode has resurfaced and has elicited scorn for the Aquino and de las Alas.

Sammy Gamboa said in Facebook: “Sakit sa dibdib kung paano siya pinagmalupitan at ininsulto ng dalawang mahaderang judges. Pinalabas siyang desperada sa mga komentaryong, ‘bigyan mo siya ng trabaho, Boss.’ Bastos at malupit ang dalawang malditang ito..nakarma din sila.

Kris Aquino displayed once again her vapidity when she told the 19-year old Gerphil, “Sana kakanta ka ng age-appropriate. Mga kanta sana na Charice. Mga kanta na maka-relate ang ka-edad mo.”
Ai-Ai chimed in: “Mga bagets maka-relate sa iyo.”
Kris even had the gall to advise the University of the Philippines music student: “You evolve.”

Gerphil defiantly told the two stupid jurors: “Hindi ako titigil sa pagkanta ng classical. Yan ang talent ko.”

Flores stressed her respect for the Filipino audience: “Ang Filipino hindi lang Tagalog ang kaya kantahin kung di iba’t-ibang lenguahe.

In front of a panel of judges who know music, Gerphil shone. During her audition at Asia’s Got Talent, Grammy-winning composer David Foster, was so impressed with Gerphil’s rendition of “Speak Softly, Love” from the classic movie“Godfather.”

“You certainly did not disappoint anybody in this room. It was really a solid performance. And your pitch is great, and I hate people who sing out of tune. You sang really in tune. Good going,” Foster said.

At the grand finals, where Gerphil performed ,”The Impossible Dream” from Man from La Mancha, Foster told her, “I promise you. The world will know about you.”

The satirical blog, Adobo Chronicles, suggested that ABS-CBN should rename their Pilipinas Got Talent, “Judges got no talent.”

The Lantern festival crowd: showcase of Taiwanese’s admirable discipline

In the 20 to 30 minutes that I was in the midst of the teeming crowd in Wuri Railway Station in Taichung, Taiwan last Saturday, I gained insights about the Taiwanese and in way, in their relations with mainland China, more than what I have learned in my readings in the past.

Thousands and thousands of people of all ages – babies, children, elderly, even the handicapped, filled every inch of the train station. Organizers said there were 1.5 million visitors that night, a record attendance.
As I flowed with the crowd, I thought of the stampede in Shanghai last New year’s eve where 36 people died and for some fleeting moments, it was scary.

But the amazing this was, the crowd was moving orderly. There was no pushing or elbowing out of each other. It was discipline at its most awesome.

The crowd was predominantly Chinese. Although the biggest number of tourists in Taiwan come from mainland China, the visitors of the Lantern Festival were mostly Taiwanese, said Vanessa Y.P. Shih, vice minister of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Last Saturday’s Wuri Railway Station scene, made me understand the reason behind the policy of Taiwan limiting the daily number of visitors from mainland China to 5,000 groups and 4,000 individuals.

“We don’t have capacity to welcome everybody all at the same time, “Shih said.

Indeed, unregulated, the People’s Republic of China which has one billion population can easily overwhelm the 23 million people Taiwanese (Republic of China) in their 36,193 square- kilometer island.

Peaceful co-existence between mainland China and Taiwan is being maintained by cross straits agreements between the Beijing and Taipei governments.

It’s unique situation. Both governments agree that there should only be One China. The Beijing government considers Taiwan a renegade province but respects the latter’s “no unification, no independence, and no use of force” policy.

The Lantern Festival visit was part of the program arranged by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a group of women journalists from different parts of the world that coincided with International Women’s month.
Taichung City is 168 kilometers from the capital Taipei and 58 minutes by high speed train. (Riding Taiwan’s high speed train, I couldn’t help but think of our MRT and I felt like crying.)

Held on first full-moon night of the lunar year, the 2015 Taiwan Lantern Festival opened last March 3 and will last up to March 15. Every year, a different city of Taiwan hosts the event.

This year’s Lantern festival in Taichung covers 20 hectares. It’s a sprawling visual delight but the main feature is the 23.4 meter high goat-shaped lantern.

An online search on the origin of the Chinese Lantern festival yielded several versions.

One version was about the Jade Emperor whose favorite crane flew down to Earth and was subsequently hunted and killed. Furious, the Jade Emperor wanted to punish people of the village with firestorm.

The Emperor’s daughter, however, took pity on the villagers and warned them of her father’s plan.

The villagers thought of ways to protect themselves from the firestorm.

A wise man suggested that they hang red lanterns outside their homes, make bonfires, and light firecrackers for three days. The plan worked because on Revenge day, the Jade Emperor came to burn the village, he saw from afar that it was ablaze and he thought his men had done his order to burn it.

The lantern trick worked and the village was saved. And peace prevailed.
