Chiz Escudero for vice president for the Liberal Party; Vice President Jejomar Binay and Gawad Kalinga founder and chairman Tony Meloto for the United Nationalist Alliance; and Senators Alan Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV for the Nacionalista Party.

Sources said Roxas and Binay both wanted Sen. Grace Poe as running mate but the lady senator feels she is not ready yet to run for a higher position in 2016.

The Mar Roxas and Chiz Escudero ticket is the handiwork of President Aquino, several sources said.
Both Roxas and Escudero, gave up their long-harbored presidential ambitions in 2010, to give way to Aquino, whose candidacy came after the death of his mother August 2009.

Sources said Roxas is reluctant about teaming up with Escudero, who endorsed Binay for president in the 2010 elections. But he has no choice given his low popularity rating.

Although there are some members of the Liberal Party, who do not give Roxas a good chance of winning in the 2016 elections, his supporters resort to mathematics to show otherwise.

Binay - Meloto

A presidential candidate has to get 40 percent of the votes of the total registered voters to win the election. Administration political analysts say Aquino’s endorsement will bring in 20 percent of the total of the voters which Presidential Spokerperson Edwin Lacierda bragged, is “lethal.”

“Whoever the President will endorse, the power of the President’s endorsement is lethal. It is effective and that’s the reason why the—whoever the President would anoint, would certainly have an advantage, “ Lacierda said last January.

The source said Roxas believes, his campaign organization will be able to get the remaining 20 percent of the votes needed to win the presidency.

Sources said Escudero, who has not returned to NPC, after he left the Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr.-controlled party in 2010, has no qualms about being the running mate of Roxas even if he endorsed Binay in 2010.

It is often said that there are no permanent friends in politics. A Roxas-Escudero team will show that there are no permanent enemies either in politics.

Cayetano-Trillanes

Cayetano-Trillanes

Binay told Philippine Star’s Marichu Villanueva that he wants an economist for a running mate in 2016. Meloto fits the bill.

The intriguing thing about this Binay-Meloto team up is that it is brokered by a presidential relative.

Earlier Binay had earlier considered Darlene Marie Berberabe, the young and pretty president and chief executive officer of Pag-ibig Fund, for running mate but that team-up didn’t materialize.

Binay is confident that with his formidable national machinery, he can afford a non-politician running mate.

At the Nacionalista Party, party members think the possibility of Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. getting embroiled in the Janet Napoles pork barrel cases, won’t make him a viable standard bearer.

They are working on a Cayetano-Trillanes ticket.

The Pichay lesson in political ads

Some are concerned that with the lifting by the Supreme Court of the airtime limits on political advertisements, we would be bombarded with all those propaganda in the next 30 days.

Less-moneyed candidates are worried that they would be drowned by those with money to burn. Independent senatorial candidate Teddy Casiño said the SC’s ruling favors wealthy candidates or those backed by the ruling elite.

“Ginawang parang unli text, unli call. The problem is its steep cost,” he said. TV ad rates, depending on the time slot, would not go below P250,000 for a 30 second ad. A candidate would need some P30 million for the remaining four weeks of the campaign.

” It is disgusting that the SC has decided against the Comelec’s effort to rein in expensive campaigns which poor or cash-strapped candidates like me cannot afford,” Casiño lamented.

The SC yesterday restored the old regulation of 120-minute limit for national candidates’ political ads over each TV station and 180 minutes over every radio station. For local candidates, the limit reverts to 50 minutes over each TV station and 90 minutes for each radio station.

The Comelec last January limited political ads national candidates to 120 minutes on all TV networks and 180 minutes for radio. For local bets, the limits were 60 minutes on TV and 90 minutes over radio.

I’m turned off by the lies and hypocrisy of many of the senatorial candidates’ TV ads. But I trust the Filipino viewers/voters. Although TV is till the number one source of information on elections, they don’t swallow hook line and sinker all that they see and hear on TV.

Proof is Prospero Pichay, Jr in the 2007 elections. Remember the ridiculously hilarious “Magtanim ng gulay sa Senado ” ad of Pichay? He was the biggest spender in the 2007 elections with P151 million.

From gulay to noodles

From gulay to noodles

Oh well, he moved up from the bottom to no. 16. But the point is, TV viewers were not enticed to plant Pechay in the Senate. The joke was had the campaign period been extended, with more people turned off by his ads Pichay would have been pushed further down the list.

Contrast that to Antonio Trillanes IV , who was then in detention and whose ads appeared only in the last two weeks of the campaign, yet placed made it to the Magic 12. (He was number 11.)

I take the SC decision as re-distribution of wealth, a very much welcome feature of democracy. Let those who have so much wealth spend their money on TV ads. Let’s just hope that broadcast network share they money with their employees.

Christopher Boga, an engineer who is now a seaman wrote reacting to a previous column about people in our barrio in Guisijan, Laua-an, Antique voting for Trillanes as their way of thanking him for the P1 million allocation of his Priority Development Assistance Fund, popularly known as pork barrel to a farm-to-market road in their place.

Excerpts from Boga’s letter:

Boga, who is from Iloilo, related that his father was a barangay captain for 20 years.

May God bless him.”

Urgent call for gun control

As always, we need to be violently jolted to do what is needed to be done. Whether the three recent incidents are harrowing enough for our authorities and lawmakers to move remain to be seen.

Bodies strewn after the gunbattle.

Last Sunday, 13 people died in a gun battle in Atimonan, Quezon. The reports get uglier as the root of the shootout or rubout is being uncovered. Three of those killed were members of the Philippine National Police and another three had identification cards of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Reports said the killings have something to do with jueteng.

Reports said authorities recovered from the vehicles 11 .45 ca. pistols, a 9 mm pistol, an M14 rifle and an M16 carbine.

Last Friday, a defeated candidate for barangay captain, Ronald Bae, went on a rampage with his .45 cal. Gun in Kawit, Cavite killing eight people including a pregnant woman, two children and a taho vendor who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Despite repeated reminders that it is prohibited to fire guns to celebrate New Year, there were still victims of stray bullets. The lives of Ranjelo Nimer and Nicole Ella were all cut short in their childhood because there are people, devoid of sense and conscience.

One of the 20 bills related to gun control pending in Congress is Senate Bill #13 authored by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV filed in 2010.

Titled “Gun Control Act of 2010”, the bill calls for tighter gun control and stiffer penalties for unlawful possession, acquisition and disposition of firearms particularly by public officials whether in civilian or in military, police or law enforcement service.

Trillanes: knows the menace of loose firearms

A former member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the misuse of arms has always been a concern of Trillanes.

It will be recalled that one of the issues they raised when he and more than 300 officers and soldiers rebelled against Gloria Arroyo on July 27, 2003 in what was known as the Oakwood Mutiny was the sale of AFP firearms to enemies of the government.

Those were the very same weapons that were killing them, they deplored the irregularity.

In Trillanes’ bill, the Philippines National Police is mandated to create a “Firearms and Ammunitions Database” which shall also include ballistic records of all firearms in the possession of private individuals, legal entities and government agencies to prevent these firearms from being used in crime or falling into the wrong hands.”

The bill also requires that “All firearms in the government arsenal of the Armed Forces of the Philippines shall, without exception, be registered in the Firearms and Explosives Division of the PNP.”

A penalty of life imprisonment shall be imposed on violators who are members of the AFP,PNP or any government employee or official, whether elective of appointive.

The current outcry is good. But we can’t help echo the song of Peter, Paul and Mary:
“Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows, That too many people have died ?”

We hope the answer will not just be blown by the wind.
