Globe to charge additional Php5 upon calling 911 hotline

Globe Telecom Inc. has just said today, July 27, that they will be charging an additional of Php5 per call on top of regular voice charges for their subscribers calling the 911 hotline.

“We would also like to inform our customers that those calling the hotlines will incur regular voice charges plus an additional P5/call for those calling the 911 hotline” – Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo

In a statement given to GMA News, Castelo noted that charging 911 calls is suggested by the government to discourage prank calls.

The 911 hotline is set to replace the Patrol 117 starting August 1 as the Philippines’ national emergency hotline for incidents like police assistance, fires, medical, calamities, and other emergencies.

Globe signs agreement to shift from Patrol 117 to 911

Ernest Cu, Globe President & CEO,  has also signed an agreement with the government to show its strong support for the new nationwide emergency hotline 911 initiative which will replace 117.

Aside from Globe, other signatories to the agreement are the country’s major telecommunications providers that include the company’s units Bayan Telecommunications and Innove.

“As a telecommunications provider, Globe recognizes that communication is critical for an emergency response mechanism to be effective. We are hopeful that the 911 system will be an effective tool in addressing the country’s emergency concerns” – Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO

Hotline 911 is expected to be implemented starting August 1, 2016. It will be the country’s emergency hotline number for incidents like police assistance, fires, medical, calamities, and other emergencies.
