LG G3 display compared against Galaxy S5 and One M8

As we get closer and closer to seeing the LG G3, more and more details have been surfacing regarding the South Korean manufacturer’s next flagship smartphone. Just recently, LG itself has leaked the dimension of its upcoming handset and a mockup was made based on this to determine how big the display will be.

The mockup puts the LG G3 side by side with other current flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8). In terms of screen resolution, the G3 reigns supreme since we know that it will be sporting a qHD display with 2560 x 1440 pixels, while the two only sports Full HD at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

The LG G3’s 5.5-inch display is undoubtedly larger than the S5’s 5.1-inch and One (M8)’s 5-inch screen, and you might think that this is just way too big since it’s almost as big as the Galaxy Note 3 phablet’s 5.7-inch panel. Although this may be the case, the mockup shows that the One (M8) is even taller than the G3. LG managed to do this by widening the display to make use of more space, while also reducing its bezels to a minimum.

What we’re seeing here is that even though LG equipped the G3 with a far larger display than its peers, it looks like it won’t be that hefty and will still be manageable with one hand. They’ve also managed to squeeze in a bigger 2K resolution into its screen so we can expect the G3 to have one impressive display when it’s officially released.

QHD AMOLED screen, the future of displays?

1080p used to be the highest screen resolution there was for mobile phones, but a new kind of display panel now takes its place in terms of pixel count. The first ever QHD AMOLED display has arrived and it brings a 2560 x 1440 screen resolution along with it.

2k resolution

The credit doesn’t go to Samsung or LG as they are expected to come out with devices boasting 2K displays. Instead, Taiwan-based AU Optronics pioneers in developing  and distributing a 5.7-inch panel which holds the record for having the highest resolution. As mentioned earlier, the screen boasts 2560 x 1440 screen resolution accompanied by an impressive pixel density of 517ppi. The display is also thin at only 0.57mm.

This only backs up the reports and rumors of upcoming devices sporting 2K displays. Not only that, there’s also a big chance that it might be the standard for flagship phones in the future. The question is, do we really need over 2K resolution on 5-inch smartphones?

Google Nexus 8.9 releases June, features 2K+ display?

Google is said to be in the process of releasing an 8.9-inch variant to add to its well-received Nexus lineup. The Nexus 8.9 could feature a display with more than 2K resolution and will hit store shelves some time in June if alleged reports prove true.

According to the Director of Tablet and Monitor Research at IHS Technology, volume production of the ‘high-performance’ Nexus 8.9 is expected to roll out in either July or August, after its probable announcement at Google’s I/O event in June.

Although it might seem that Google isn’t inside its familiar territory with big-sized devices, its selling point will be its reasonable pricing and better performance ratio. The Nexus 8.9 (which HTC could be making) should be around $299 (Php13,500) and would carry the next Android OS.

It looks like we’ll be seeing more tablets with screen resolutions going up to 2K as a standard. We’ve recently reported on Samsung’s upcoming device that could have a 2K Super AMOLED display as well as the larger Nexus 10 2; but the Nexus 8.9 plans to top those as it could feature display resolutions of more than 2K. We’ll let you know as soon as this is confirmed and when the exact pixel measurement is out.
