Dremel partners with skilled hobbyist Sonny Limjap

Multi-tool industry leader Dremel recently welcomed renowned Cab1net founder and administrator Sonny Limjap as the brand’s newest Rotary Tools ambassador. Dremel’s partnership with Sonny aims to showcase Dremel tools’ powerful features that will benefit any craftsman as he creates his projects.

“We at Dremel offer products and services that deliver the best results, such as our line of multi-tools and accessories,” says Michelle Espinosa, Brand Manager of Dremel Philippines. “We are delighted to welcome Sonny to the Dremel family. With his technical know-how and vast experience in craft making, we are confident that our joint efforts will promote the complete and flexible solutions of Dremel.”

Sonny has been using Dremel tools since 1982. A skilled woodworker, DIY enthusiast and hobbyist, Sonny has worked with various materials such as acrylics, teal, metal, and stone, but wood, according to Sonny, is special.

He started woodworking in 2006 after a long career as a professional in the automotive industry. He inherited his passion for woodworking from his grandfather, who Sonny says is a “jack of all trades and master of all”. He is Sonny’s inspiration in pursuing this craft. “As a child, I spent a lot of time with my Lolo. I was always curious about his impressive old toolbox for home repairs, so I decided to tinker with it and created my first project – a computer case,” Sonny said.

He continues to hone his craftsmanship skills by studying woodworking lessons online and recreating them using his Dremel tools. “It’s one thing to know something, and another thing to do it,” he said. “To become genuinely good, you must apply the things you learn. I strive to do that with my craft everyday.”

Sonny proudly shared that Dremel is his go-to brand of tools for his smaller projects, which enable him to finish quicker without compromising craftsmanship and quality. “It’s perfect for the application. I can get into the micro-details, unlike other tools. The wide selection of accessories and its industrial design are just bonuses to an already very good Dremel tools lineup,” he said. “Dremel stands out because it definitely makes my life easier.”

From miniature home embellishments to 14-foot conference tables, Sonny now has a collection of customized furniture which patrons may purchase from his own shop. Aside from woodworking, Sonny maintains his founding website www.Cab1net.com, an online network of builders, carpenters and architects.

PNB posts P1.2B Net Income in First Quarter of 2015

The Philippine National Bank (PNB) sustained its profitability in the first quarter of 2015 with consolidated net income reaching P1.2 billion.

During the quarter, the Bank’s net interest income stood at P4.25 billion, slightly down by 4.4% from the year-ago level which included one-time gains from the redemption of non-performing assets. Excluding these gains, the Bank’s net interest income actually grew by 11.4%. This growth was fueled by the strong performance of PNB’s core lending business. Loans grew by 17% year-on-year to P302 billion in the first quarter of 2015 with substantial contributions coming from corporate and commercial/SME loans which posted double-digit increases. Likewise, the Bank’s loans-to-deposits ratio significantly improved to 69% from 57% a year ago, reflecting the Bank’s continued focus on generating a more stable stream of income.

On the other hand, fee-based and other income which comprised 32% of the Bank’s total operating income increased by 9.1% to P1.96 billion compared to the same period last year. Reduction in treasury-related income was compensated by a strong growth in the Bank’s insurance business, the sale of foreclosed assets and service fees which collectively grew by 31.5%.

Meanwhile, PNB’s initiatives to streamline operations enabled the Bank to keep the growth of overhead expenses to a moderate 5% to reach P4.4 billion.

By end-March 2015, PNB’s consolidated total assets stood at P620.6 billion. The Bank continued to improve its asset quality as non-performing loans (NPL) decreased to P9.3 billion from end-2014 level of P9.9 billion. Gross NPL ratio and net NPL ratio went down to 3.24% and 0.64% from 3.42% and 0.92%, respectively in December 2014. NPL coverage is now at 108.4%.

The Group’s consolidated capital position remained strong with a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 21.32% and a CET 1 ratio of 18.09% against 20.61% and 17.43%, respectively in December 2014.

As a partner in countryside development, PNB also entered into a loan agreement of up to Php 1.2 billion with Misamis Oriental 1 Rural Electric Service Cooperative, Inc. (MORESCO I). The 10-year term loan facility will be used to finance the construction of transmission lines, rehabilitation and upgrading of existing distribution lines and system loss reduction projects. MORESCO I services the electricity needs of 10 Municipalities in Misamis Oriental.

Occasions Filipinos never fail to celebrate

For Filipinos, food and celebrations are inseparable. Nothing seems to reinforce the social bonds better than occasions made memorable by the company of family and close friends.

As a country, we are known for having many holidays. These holidays are used as a reason to come together to enjoy each other’s company and renew the bonds between each member. And while we have a penchant for celebrating even ordinary occasions, there are few occasions that we always mark in a big way.

Over the years, Red Ribbon’s cakes, breads, and pastries have become a staple of these major celebratory occasions and make family get-together more memorable. These cakes and pastries have somehow become the perfect ending to any celebratory meal whether it is a feast that’s grand or meal that is simple.

As soon as the “ber” months start, we know that the Christmas season is upon us. Beginning September, we already begin counting down the days to December 25. As the air begins to chill, we anticipate every party we attend, look forward to every get together and get excited as Christmas Eve draws near. Come the evening of December 24, we welcome Christmas with a feast fit for a king. As is our custom, the table is almost always filled to overflowing usually with food that would take hours to prepare. Morcon, Christmas ham, turkey, fruit salad and lechon are just some of the food commonly served during noche buena. After the meal, gifts are exchanged and the ties that bind are renewed.

Filipinos do things in a big way. It is no surprise that we like to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a great deal of fanfare. New Year’s Eve is an occasion where we welcome the coming year with the customary fireworks display in an effort to drive away the spirits of the previous year. Like all our big celebrations, we gather friends and loved ones with a feast. The dining table is usually filled with the most sumptuous food and the most glorious desserts. New Year’s Eve celebrations are marked by the sharing of a meal, gifts and conversation among family members. It is a time when we throw out the old ways to make way for the new.

Every second Sunday of May is a day we always find reason to celebrate. It is a day we honor the most important women in our lives: our mothers. It is no surprise that families meet up, give gifts and share food, good conversation and memories about how wonderful our mothers are. While not as big a celebration as Christmas and New Year, Mother’s Day celebrations always give families a reason to come together and share a meal and memories and thank our mothers for always being there.

If May is the month wherein we celebrate the love we have for our mothers, June is the month where we pay tribute to our dads. Like Mother’s Day, we find the time to meet up over a meal and more importantly, thank our fathers for providing for all of us in the family. And like any celebration, gifts and food are shared among one another in the family.

Birthdays are perhaps the most personalized celebration of all. Some celebrate alone but being a society with close family ties, most birthday celebrations are done with the family in full attendance. The food we serve during birthdays also takes on special meaning. Noodles or pasta is one common fare during birthday parties because it means long life and prosperity.

February 14 is what many consider a day for lovers to celebrate. Flowers and chocolates are synonymous to this day. However, over the years, Filipinos have come to treat this day as a day to be with family and friends. After all, who says February 14 is only for lovers? While this day may not be as grandly celebrated as Christmas, New Year’ or Mother’s Day, we still make it a point to gather the people near and dear to us and celebrate with a meal that is shared and served with love.

Indeed, these celebratory occasions are demonstrative of the close-knit family ties we Filipinos have and moreover, how family, occasion, and food are shared among one another. These are the hallmarks that define our culture and have added color our heritage for many generations now.

Microsoft intros Hyperlapse for Android & Windows

Microsoft announces that its video-smoothing software for time lapses can now be used in different platforms. Hyperlapse Mobile is now on Android and Windows plus an addition of Hyperlapse Pro for desktops.

Microsoft Hyperlapse-2

We’ve previously reported about Microsoft’s Hyperlapse algorithm and you can read more about it in this link. Now, the company is bringing it to mobile devices starting with Android and Windows. It’s important not to confuse this with the iOS-exclusive Hyperlapse app that was released by Instagram last year.

The new Microsoft Hyperlapse is compatible with Android 4.4 KitKat and Lollipop, while the supported devices running Windows Phone 8.1 are as follows:

  • Lumia 435, 530, 532, 535, 630, 635, 636, 638, 640, 640 XL, 730, 735, 830, 930, 1520

The Android version is currently on Beta mode and you can find the pre-release version by joining their community. Windows Phone users may download the app straight from their site.

As for those who want more advanced options you can get the Hyperlapse Pro for Windows PC. With it you can edit your old footage and not like Instagram’s wherein the video has to be shot within the app. It is offered for a free trial as of now, but the company is readying a paid version later on.

Finally, you now have something to do with those long POV footage (while driving, biking, etc) you’ve shot before on your action camera and turn them into something more interesting.
