Facebook to launch massive solar-powered Internet drones

Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Facebook will soon launch a huge unmanned aircraft that can beam internet access down to people from the sky.

Facebook’s Internet drone, codenamed Aquila, will have a wingspan greater than a Boeing 737 but will weigh less than a car. Solar panels will be installed on its wings allowing it to fly at an altitude of more than 60,000 feet for a month.

“Aircraft like these will help connect the whole world because they can affordably serve the 10% of the world’s population that live in remote communities without existing internet infrastructure.” said Zuckerberg.

The Aquila drone is part of the Internet.org effort to bring internet access to more people around the world. The initiative recently launched in the country in collaboration with Smart Communications, Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular.
