Samsung to Launch First Smartphone w/ 4GB RAM

Lazada Philippines

2015 may very well be the year of 4GB smartphones, at least that’s what the rumor mill seems to be pointing out with the recent leak of the Sony Xperia Z3X and now the speculation around the Samsung Galaxy S6 which, judging by their recent announcement, could be the first smartphone to launch with 4GB of RAM.

The speculation arose when Samsung announced that the mass production of industry’s first low-power double-data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with 8GB capacity which is based on the company’s 20nm process.

Samsung LPDDR4

According to Samsung, their new LPDDR4 DRAM will be two-times faster than a “typical DDR3 RAM” for PC and, in the case of the 2GB package, is expected to be 40% more power efficient than its LPDDR3 counterpart.

Furthermore, the South Korean giant stated that apart from lowering the operating voltage to 1.1V, the company’s new 8GB LPDDR4 DRAMs can support Ultra-High Definition video recording and playback, not to mention continuous shooting of 20MP+ pictures.

Although Samsung hasn’t really confirmed that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 (and most likely the Galaxy Note 5 too) will sport the next-generation DRAM, I think that we can all agree that the tech giant will not allow their two franchise centerpieces to be left behind in the specs race, especially since they’ve openly announced that they’s started providing LPDDR4 modules to other device manufacturers starting this month.
