Xiaomi Redmi 1S vs. Asus Zenfone 5

The price category of Php5,000 to Php7,000 are slowly being ruled by really good smartphones like the Xiaomi Redmi 1S and the Asus Zenfone 5. We take a look at the two and compare them with each other.

Both global brands as well recognized and have good reputation so more often than not, the choice between the two boils down to the hardware specifications and price.

The Zenfone 5 has a lot of points over the Redmi 1S, including double the RAM, expandable storage, display size and slightly higher battery capacity.

As for the performance, our Antutu Benchmakr scores put the Intel Atom of the Zenfone 5 slightly better at 22k compared to the 21k on the Snapdragon 400 of the Redmi 1S.

The Redmi 1S is cheaper by about Php1,000 so that’s one of the consideration here as well.

This redesigned PC casing from Alienware takes the cake when it comes to cutting edge. The Area 51 model introduces the triad version that is both great in terms of ergonomics and thermal management.

The chassis supports up to 3 full-sized graphics cards, a new Haswell-E 8-core processor, 32GB of RAM, SSD and HDD bays as well as a 1,500-watt power supply.

Alienware has not revealed how much this new Area 51 chassis would retail but we’re pretty sure it won’t be cheap.

CD-R King sells 3G+WiFi signal enhancing case for the iPhone 5/5S

CD-R King recently posted on their Facebook page that they’re offering a 3G+WiFi signal enhancing case designed for the iPhone 5 and 5S.

The case is based on the Linkase Pro made by Taiwanese company Absolute Technology. According to the company, the case uses EMW (Electro Magnetic Waveguide) technology that “steers radiation energy emitted by the iPhone away from the head and body and into open space, improving cellular signal significantly.”

The Linkase Pro has a price tag of $39.95, or around Php1,700, on Absolute Technology’s website. While the one selling at CD-R King is priced at Php990. See CD-R King’s listing here.

Acer Iconia B1-730 lands for under Php4,500

A new Iconia B1 tablet from Acer has landed in stores and is selling for under Php4,500. Powered by an Intel Atom Z2560 1.6GHz dual-core and Android Kitkat, the Iconia B1 730 is probably one of the most affordable tablet with this combo.

The Iconia B1-70 is a 7-inch Android tablet with 1280 × 800 pixels IPS display, PowerVR SGX544 GPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage expandable to 32GB via microSD, WiFi, Bluetooth, 5MP rear camera and 3700mAh battery.

Local retailer store Villman has this one stock and sells them for just Php4,488.

MIUI 6 Express launcher for non-Xiaomi devices now available for download

The kind folks at the MIUI Forums has just released their new MIUI 6 Express/Lite launcher which can be downloaded and installed on non-Xiaomi Android smartphones.

The new MIUI Express launcher sports the look and feel of the MIUI 6. It includes themes, lockscreen, wallpapers, effects, icons, fonts, and access to some of Xiaomi’s apps like the MI App Market. We installed it on the Cherry Mobile Pulse and so far it’s working smoothly. Some parts are in Chinese but not a lot that will confuse users.
