All-glass iPhone and iPad could be Apple’s secret weapon

The iPhone 6, based from the renderings and mock-ups we’ve seen, is likely to sport an all-aluminum rear shell with its display made of tough sapphire glass. Well Apple has just been granted a patent that will enable the company to make an all-glass housing for its wide range of devices. Could this give the company its needed “edge” right now?

Glass iPhone concept

Apple jumping to the phablet bandwagon not only showed that they took back what Jobs said that “no one’s gonna buy” a big phone, but also made it seem like they simply conformed to the trend set mainly by Android. But with companies still using lesser materials (like plastic) for their devices, this could be the innovation that will truly separate Apple over its competitors – something that they have been trying to do for the longest time.

The patent given to the Cupertino company is a manufacturing method that allows them to fuse glass structures together and effectively protect all the circuitry inside. This proposed all-glass design is aimed to be used for iPhones, iPads, and even iMacs. If they indeed use sapphire glass for the body it will generally result to a more durable, lightweight form factor while giving off a more premium look and feel.

The idea of holding an all-glass iPhone sounds exciting already, but we’re not quite sure yet how the glass build would affect pricing of these devices. If we were to ask you, how much would you pay for a glass iPhone or iPad?

LG makes 18-inch flexible panel, 60-inch 4K OLED is next

After introducing curved displays on a smartphone, LG is now aiming at panels the size of TV screens. They have successfully created an 18-inch foldable panel and are currently planning to go for flexible Ultra HD in the coming years.

The 18-inch OLED prototype currently has a 1200 x 800 resolution. It is flexible enough to be rolled into a tube 3cm across thanks to a new polyamide film. Instead of the usual plastic, this polyamide film is thinner and supports the back panel making it more bendable. In addition, LG was also able to make a transparent OLED panel which is claimed to have triple the transmittance of current see-through LCD displays giving off clearer and better picture quality.

Though it may already sound to be an achievement, the company isn’t stopping there. Display SVP and Head of R&D In-Byung Kang claimed that, “by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches.”

Will we be seeing rolled up displays inside storage tubes of students in the future?
