Google contact lens with built-in microcameras patented

Google scores a patent on a “smart” contact lens system that users could control by the way they blink their eyes. People with eye problems (even the blind) can greatly take advantage of this new technology. Find out why after the jump.

The futuristic contact lenses was reported to have embedded microcameras (take note, more than one). These microcameras are impressively small that they don’t affect the thickness of an ordinary contact lens. Once worn, they line up to the iris in a way that it can “look” where you’re currently looking. To control these contact lenses, a system will be developed that will understand the user’s blinks as it corresponds to specific functions or commands.

Apart from not looking like a total geek by wearing these contact lenses instead of the Google Glass, Patentbolt shares that they can be used to help people with eye problems and even save lives. The lenses could alert the user’s paired device (such as a smartphone) when a dangerous instance arises.

“For example, a blind person wearing Google’s contact lens with a built-in camera may be walking on a sidewalk and approaching an intersection. The analysis component of the contact lens can process the raw image data of the camera to determine processed image data indicating that the blind person is approaching intersection with a crosswalk and establish that there is a car approaching the intersection,” Patentbolt explained.

We’re only scratching the surface here when it comes to functionalities. We’re sure that as time progresses, the company will be able to come up with more use for this technology that looks like it came from a sci-fi movie. We’re also pretty sure that it will stir some reactions regarding issues like invasion of privacy as Google Glass is already experiencing as of now.

Oppo Find 7a gets TWRP custom recovery

The Philippines is one of the first few countries to see the Oppo Find 7a as it is not yet released in the United States. After a week of its local launch, a TWRP custom recovery is now supported by the device thanks to developers. Now, users of the Find 7a can manually backup and restore their entire handsets.

TWRP or TeamWin Recovery Project is a touch-based custom recovery tool that was originally made for Nexus devices. It didn’t last long, though, before it was made available for other smartphones and tablets. Using TWRP, not only could you fully backup and restore your Find 7a, but you can also wipe data and install custom roms with it.

We know how much Android users love rooting their smartphones and adding mods (after all, that’s one of the main reasons people prefer Android over iOS) so here’s the download link for Oppo Find 7a’s TWRP.

Once you’ve downloaded the .img file, follow the steps as instructed by TeamWin:

Go into settings and enable USB debugging. On your computer type:

adb reboot bootloader

Your device should now be in fastboot mode. Type the following command, changing the recoveryfilename to the correct path and name of the image you want to flash:

fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img

Note that you will need to change the last part to match the name of the file that you just downloaded. You will also need adb and fastboot for your computer.

DATA A DAY: Is the Bangsamoro an Islamic state?

ON MONDAY, the Bangsamoro Transition Commission submitted to Malacanang the draft Basic Law that would create a new political entity that would take the place of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The envisioned Bangsamoro is the latest, and hopefully, the lasting solution to decades of conflict in the Southern Philippines. After a thorough review by Malacanang, the draft law will be submitted to Congress for its consideration. Once passed by Congress, the Bangsamoro Basic Law would be presented to the residents of the ARMM in a referendum. Only those areas that vote to be part of the new Bangsamoro substate would be included in the new political entity.

MILF 2

All of the various political entities created by the government since the time of President Ferdinand Marcos have generated controversy in a land that has long been afflicted by divisions and mistrust. The persistent suspicion of those who have opposed the previous autonomous regions in Mindanao is that government has bent over backwards to grant Muslim rebels their own Islamic state, one that is governed solely through Shariah or Islamic Law that is enforced by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

For today’s Data a Day:

TRUE OR FALSE: The Bangsamoro political entity will be an Islamic state.

For the answer to that question, visit the PCIJ’s Data a Day site, or come take a look at the PCIJ’s MoneyPolitics Online website for more relevant information.
