Clone Wars: Xiaomi MiKey versus Pressy

Xiaomi has recently launched MiKey –a tiny accessory that attaches to a smartphone/tablet headphone jack and allows user to assign tasks and/or launch apps by just pressing it. But it’s not their new product that tickled our interest, rather a similar device called Pressy which came almost half-a-year before it.

Xiaomi MiKey

It was back in October when we first stumble upon Pressy when its inventors brought it to Kickstarter with the hopes of garnering enough funds for their device to enter mass-production. It didn’t take long before Pressy caught fire and by the time the project ended, the team amassed USD695,138 worth of pledges which was way more than their goal of forty grand.

With all that money lying around, one would assume that the Pressy team would have no problems with mass-producing their product. Sadly, that wasn’t the case, and Nimrod Back and his associates is having a little setback with the production line which caused them to miss their deadline (March) to deliver the goods to the consumers.

To make matters worse for the Pressy team, similar products have started making their way to the internet. There’s one in IndieGoGo called ShutIT, another one in a Chinese Kickstarter called Kuai Anniu (Speed Button) and MiKey which was recently launched by Xiaomi.

Of all these so-called Pressy clones, the Xiaomi MiKey poses the biggest threat to Pressy’s success because Xiaomi has a more established presence in the global market, but also because MiKey is significantly cheaper ($0.80 vs $27) than Pressy.

TechInAsia highlights the similarity between the Kuai Anniu and Xiaomi MiKey’s design

According to one of his updates, Nimrod Back has stated that they will take legal actions against Pressy clones. It’s not going to be easy, but once they’ve proven that they were the first to the punch, they can possible rake in more money when in it’s all said and done.

Meanwhile, when asked by TechInAsia about the MiKey’s design, Xiaomi claims that “MiKey is its own design, and it did not acquire Kuai Anniu”.

Kiefer Ravena goes on a Summer Roadtrip with his Suzuki Swift

UAAP basketball phenom Kiefer Ravena of the Ateneo de Manila University takes a break from his very busy schedule and brings his friends to a roadtrip using his Suzuki Swift. Driving his 1.4 L Suzuki sports compact, Kiefer spends a wakeboarding weekend with his buddies in Nuvali, Laguna.

The Wakeboarding Experience

Along with three of his best buddies, Kiefer started summer earlier this year with a road trip to the Republ1c Wakepark in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. An enthusiast of water sports, Kiefer wants to share with his friends the exhilaration that wakeboarding brings. There were a lot of laughs and gaffes at the onset, but after a few rounds, all of his friends got the hang of wakeboarding and they all had a fun-filled day.

Moments like these are what fuel Kiefer to manage the daily grind of being a top athlete at such a young age. In spite of his busy schedule, he tries to find time to relax by doing one of the things he enjoys doing the most – going on out of town trips.

The Long Trip

“Being away from the city and from the basketball court even for just a day is already out of the ordinary for me. With my busy training and practice schedules, it’s very hard for me to find time like this to enjoy an out-of-town vacation with my friends,” Kiefer shares.

To help drivers like Kiefer stay awake during long trips, the Suzuki Swift offers a pleasurable audio experience with its high-end stereo with a CD player and a USB socket. The surround music played through 6 speakers makes each drive a fun and entertaining one.

This compact is definitely a perfect companion for road trips because it produces an impressive power of 94bhp at 6,000 rpm and a torque of 130Nm at 4,000 rpm— more than enough to carry a bunch of friends and some luggage. The Swift’s compact and stylish interior has big and comfortable body-hugging seats that can fit five people, including 6-foot basketball players just like the friends that Kiefer tagged along with him in this trip.

Aside from his drive to Nuvali, Kiefer shares that the farthest he has brought his Suzuki Swift to is Tagaytay where he drove uphill to get an overlooking view of the Taal volcano. Just the same, Kiefer shares that driving the Swift to Tagaytay was a breeze.

The Daily Drive

Beyond taking his car for long drives, Kiefer uses his Swift more for his daily trips to school and to the gym. “I’m very attached to my Suzuki Swift. I drive it every day to school and to practice. I like that it’s compact yet I am still able to fit all of my basketball gear,” he shares. With a back seat that can be folded to provide more luggage space, Kiefer definitely has a lot of room inside the car where he can load his stuff.

“I also like using it daily because it is very easy to manoeuvre, it helps me save on fuel, and it doesn’t give me a hard time parking,” Kiefer adds. With the Swift’s improved transmission, gear shifts are made smoother and manoeuvring through daily city traffic has become practically effortless.

The car’s compact body also makes it very easy for the driver to secure parking spaces. All these plus superior fuel economy and environmental performance makes the Suzuki Swift an ideal partner whether it be for long drives or for quick, short trips to and from school every day.

The Lowdown

With his experiences with the Suzuki Swift, Kiefer recommends the car for first-time car owners. He quips, “For start-up drivers, if you want a car that fits your budget perfectly, offers comfortability and easy manoeuvrability, provides utmost safety and is low on fuel consumption, then I would definitely recommend the Suzuki Swift. It’s really worth the price and it gives great value for money.”

Just like the fun and exciting sport of wakeboarding that Kiefer and his friends tried in Nuvali recently, the Suzuki Swift offers a fun and exciting experience with every single drive.

DMCI Homes gets BIR award for paying over P1B tax

DMCI Homes is glad to receive the BIR award and become part of the agency’s Billionaires’ Club.

DMCI Homes was among 10 companies that received the 2013 Billionaires’ Club Award from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for paying more than P1 billion in taxes last year.

DMCI Homes President Alfredo R. Austria and Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations Ramil Lombos received the award from Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima, BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares and BIR Assistant Commissioner Alfredo V. Misajon during the launching ceremony of the BIR’s 2014 tax campaign for large taxpayers at the Solaire Resort in Parañaque City on Feb. 25, 2014.

In the event that also fetes the 2,120 companies in the BIR’s list of large taxpayers in the country, including DMCI Homes, Purisima and Henares thanked the top executives of the big corporations for helping the BIR in its tax collection effort.

DMCI Homes and other companies paid P755.23 billion in taxes last year through the BIR’s Large Taxpayer Service (LTS) department. The figure, which is 15.98 percent higher than the LTS’s tax collection in 2012, represents more than 60 percent of the BIR’s total 2013 tax collection target of P1.217 trillion.

Austria said DMCI Homes is glad to receive the BIR award and become part of the agency’s Billionaires’ Club.

“We’re also quite surprised that DMCI Homes, being a relatively younger company compared to the other real estate companies, was chosen as part of the Billionaires’ Club,” Austria said.

Lombos said DMCI Homes is a responsible developer and pays the right taxes.

“It is one of our ways of helping the government,” he said.

The premiere developer of innovative resort-themed residential condominium communities was the only real estate company among the awardees. Lombos said it was only last year that DMCI Homes’ tax payment reached P1 billion and the company was classified by the BIR as a large taxpayer.

During the BIR event, Purisima urged large taxpayers to continue supporting the LTS as this year’s tax collection target of the BIR is bigger at P1.456 trillion. Henares said it is the consistency of the tax payment to the LTS that basically allows the BIR to make sure that the government has that amount of money to spend for the basic services.

Austria said DMCI Homes fully supports the BIR’s 2014 tax collection campaign dubbed “I Love the Philippines, I Pay My Taxes Right, It’s as Easy As RFP (Register File Pay).”

“It is our hope that all companies in the Philippines pay the right taxes, especially those in the real estate and construction sector, so that we can all contribute to the progress of the country,” Austria said. “We also hope that these taxes be put to good use.”
