The Bread Bag Pandesal Bar

What could be more Filipino than pandesal? One good part of living in the Philippines is being able to partake of piping hot pandesal during breakfast, or merienda. There is nothing like the taste of this rounded bread full of crumbs, about the size of a fist, which is versatile enough to be eaten with a lot of fillings, with coffee or with native hot chocolate.

Pan de sal

Pandesal has social relevance too. Observers are fond of equating the size and price of the pandesal with the state of the economy. Indeed, it has upped its value from one peso each to about two pesos now, depending on the bakery or store. Signs of the times.

There are also gourmet purveyors of this national bread. Take for example, The Breadbag Pandesal Bar which we tried, upon a friend’s recommendation. Their neat hole-in-the-wall at the Ortigas Home Depot in Pasig is set to expand soon to Megamall and the Fort. One of the owners happens to belong to the family of the defunct Casa Marcos. Even though the once-popular restaurant is closed, they’ve kept the wood-fired brick oven used for baking their pan de sal and it’s now at The Bread Bag. You will know it differs from the others because of the texture and superior quality.

Arroz a la cubana pan de sal

The Pan Ala Cubana (P111) is their take on the mainstream Pinoy dish with sauteed ground meat, a slice of fried saba banana and sunny side up egg ~ large enough to fill a big bun. These are served with sauce and kamote chips.

Adobo flakes with kesong puti

Another meal (or snack, if you prefer) is the pan de sal with adobo flakes and kesong puti (P111), served with a separate adobo sauce.

The Bread Bag’s fillings are rather fancy, although you can just order plain pan de sal at P6 each and the whole wheat variety is more expensive at P7. When I asked why they’re a bit pricey, the owner replied that their pan de sal isn’t just full of air, but are standardized at 50 grams each :D

Bread bowl

This is the Cream of Mushroom Soup on a Pandesal Bread Bowl that my son had. It was yummy.

Pan de sal pudding

I also liked their new offering, the Pandesal Pudding (P99) – day-old bread made even more delicious with a generous dash of caramel sauce. Great with their native hot chocolate, a comfort brew in every sense of the word.

The store’s official website rocks! Take a look to see the many things they’ve done with the poor man’s bread. Not missing are the palaman made from menudo, caldereta, corned beef, sardines, and embutido, to name just a few.

When I teased them about their user-friendly website, I found out that it wasn’t really a wonder since our host (and one of the owners) Mr. Kevin Khoe, used to be the CEO of Yehey.com and heads the company which overhauled Manila Bulletin Online recently. Thanks Kevin!

Have you made your own Havaianas?

Early yesterday, I went to the Rockwell tent to Make my Own Havaianas. Maye your own Havaianas is an annual event where Havaianaticos (Fans of Havaianas) gather to assemble a fully customized pair of flipflops: from the sole, to its straps and even the embellishments on its straps.

The media and the bloggers were actually invited to the event last tuesday. But since I was out of Manilaz for almost one week, I was not able to join my fellow bloggers in their adventure to create the cutest fully customized Havaianas pair!

So off I went to the Rockwell Tent yesterday at around 11AM. I got the shock of my life when the line leading to the Tent is so long. I’d estimate at least an hour’s worth of sunbathing s needed before I can get inside the selling area.

This is actually my first time to try Make my own Havaianas, though I have had several pairs before, but not the customized one. I was just sop totally amazed that I can totally control how my flipflops would look like. I took me quite some time before I have finally decided on my flipflop’s sole and strap colors. I have to try and test all color possibilities by rotating the roulette which has the sole on its first layer, and the assorted straps on the second layer.

after that, I have to chose which limited edition pins or gemstones should I place on my sandal straps. What I actually like in this year’s Make your own Havaianas 2009 is that they added a local flavor to make the flipflops more Pinoy. Assorted pins are available like jeepneys, sorbetes cart, tarsier, vinta, Philippine map, a NOYPI sign, other pins including cameras, beach, old TV,and a whole lot more.

For my flip flops, I picked a black diamond to be studded beside the Havaianas logo, and at the other end, the Noypi pin. on the other side of the strap the jeepney and vinta alternate each other. I picked the Gray sole and the silver gray metallic strap.

It was really fun seeing how they assembled my Havaianas flipflops from scratch. Many many thanks to the people from Havaianas Philippines and many many thanks also to Nix! :D

Experience Ocean Adventure in Subic!

Last weekend, we had a family outing at the Ocean Park in Subic. Ocean Adeventure is a unique one of a kind marine park located in the former US Naval base in Subic. The park features animal encounters like sea lions, dolphins, and false killer whales.

For PhP450 for adults and PhP370 for children under 12 years old, one could experience a unique thrill with these cute and cuddly animals.

When we arrived at the park just before 10AM, a high dive show featured some European divers splashing right in front of us.

After the 30 minute show we then moved to another place to watch the Sea Lion Show. The kids and the young-at-heart were all amazed at the ability of these cuddly sea creatures.

After the Sea lions show, we then toured the other features of the park like the Shark Viewing deck, the Aquarium, and the Gift Shop.

From there we then went to the parks grandstand to witness the dolphin show. Actually the show doesn’t just feature dolphins, it also has false killer whales in its lineup. It also featured 2 dolphins that it has been rescued by Ocean Adventure.

The marine park also has a lot of food kiosks all over the place, and a large Cafe where guests can take lunch or quench thirst.
