Hello ‘Windows’: Microsoft to wipe out ‘Nokia’ and ‘Windows Phone’ brands

Lazada Philippines

With the release of new mobile handsets running on Windows 8.1 such as the Cherry Mobile Alpha Luxe and Play and the HTC One (M8), one can notice that they refer to the new gizmos as Windows, sans the Phone from the branding.

WindowsPhone

This seems to be the case for the Redmond giant, as a leaked official internal document details the company’s plans to not only remove the ‘Windows Phone’ branding on all partner manufacturer handsets, but as well as the ‘Nokia’ branding on their now-owned mobile phones, keeping the ‘Lumia’ as their primary brand alive.

This move by Microsoft is a step towards unifying all their Windows operating systems (which includes Desktop, RT and Phone) under one ecosystem and branding in their forthcoming huge OS update.

Microsoft to rename Nokia Oyj to Microsoft Mobile

In a leaked letter to Devices and Services business suppliers, Microsoft announced that once the deal has been finalized on the 25th of this month, the software giant will drop the “Nokia Oyj” brand in favor of Microsoft Mobile Oy.

Despite of the rumored rebranding, the Finnish firm clearly stated that it will continue to conduct its other businesses (HERE, NSN and Advance Technologies) under their old company name.

Dear Supplier,

On September 3, 2013, Nokia Corporation announced its intention to sell substantially all of its Devices and Services Business to Microsoft Corporation. We anticipate the transaction to close during April 2014.

Under the terms of the sale, Microsoft will assume all rights, benefits and obligations of the Nokia Devices and Services business, including Nokia’s agreements with suppliers, customers and partners which pertain to the Devices and Services business. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to update you that the current terms and conditions that you have with the Devices and Services business will not change.

Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy. Microsoft Mobile Oy is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices.

In addition to becoming a supplier for Microsoft Mobile Oy, we appreciate that you might also remain a supplier to the continuing businesses of Nokia (i.e., NSN, HERE or Advanced Technologies) after the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia Devices and Services. Nokia will communicate separately any changes in invoicing methods and addresses before the close of this transaction.
