Microsoft to pull the plug on IE 8, 9 and 10 on Tuesday

If you’re still using Internet Explorer, specifically the 8, 9, and 10 versions, then you should start saying goodbye and move to IE 11, Edge, or other web browsers as Microsoft will pull the plug on January 12, 2016.

According to Microsoft’s support page, the company announced the “End of Life” of Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10 for the following Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition, Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition.

Users of the said browsers will get a notification and will receive a cumulative security update to finally put the browsers to rest.

Microsoft Confirms Internet Explorer’s Impending Demise

After two decades of service, Microsoft’s own Chris Capossela expressed the software giant’s plan of moving the Internet Explorer brand to the back seat in favor of the new and improved browser codenamed Project Spartan for the upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

According to Capossela, Microsoft has not yet decided on the name of the new browser, but what is guaranteed is that the Redmond-based firm wants to steer clear of the Internet Explorer brand for Project Spartan. This is primarily due to the fact that the IE has failed to regain a good reputation among internet users despite of MS’ best effort to remove the stigma brought forth by the security loopholes in IE6.

He did, however, mention that the use of Project Spartan as the main browser of Windows 10 will not exactly be the doom of the beleaguered browser, at least not yet. Capossela stated that IE will still be part of some of the Win10 builds, albeit for compatibility reasons for enterprise versions of the upcoming operating system.

We recognize some enterprises have legacy web sites that use older technologies designed only for Internet Explorer, such as custom ActiveX controls and Browser Helper Objects. For these users, Internet Explorer will also be available on Windows 10. Internet Explorer will use the same dual rendering engines as Spartan, ensuring web developers can consistently target the latest web standards.

Unless Microsoft decides that the IE brand is still worth keeping, the fate of browser currently hangs in the balance and is tipping in the wrong direction.

For what it’s worth, we hope that this all hullaballoo isn’t just for the sake of not passing the negative image of IE to Project Spartan. What Microsoft should really be focusing on, in our opinion, is how they can make their upcoming Project Spartan good enough, feature and security wise, to not suffer the same fate as IE and compete against popular third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

Microsoft unveils Project Spartan, the IE successor

Microsoft also announced in its press conference the successor to the legendary Internet Explorer, a new browser currently named as Project Spartan.

Project-Spartan

The new browser leading the Redmond giant’s newest operating system presents a more streamlined UI, focusing more on content that’s optimized on any device you’re using. Microsoft touts this as the best browser for distraction-free reading.

Note-taking tools and live annotations will also be a key feature in the new MS browser. Users can draw and highlight text on any space within the browser. This feature is not exclusive only to devices with touch and pen functions, as Microsoft aims to bring this

Also a key feature, Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, Cortana, will be heavily integrated into Project Spartan. It will pop up along with necessary information depending on which website you are currently browsing, like offering maps, directions and menu when you browse along a restaurant’s website.

While the current internet browser has met its fate, Internet Explorer will still be available on technical preview of Windows 10 Enterprise version.

Upcoming Internet Explorer successor image leaked

Lazada Philippines

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new browser to replace its native Windows Internet Explorer. Will IE soon say goodbye? Maybe not yet.

Above is a leaked screenshot of project Spartan, a newborn browser for the upcoming Windows 10, taken last November 2014. While it doesn’t look like much, it is nice to see a very minimal approach except for the icons. We sure hope it will change with the recent versions. Word has it that Spartan was born September of last year with a particular team working on it.

Voice commands, probably by Cortana, will be supported in the app such as “add to favorites”, “make that my homepage”, and “go to Facebook.com”. Looking forward for updates regarding this one. We’ll keep you guys updated.
