Intel to cut down on Atom chips

Intel, the marquee PC chipmaker, is immediately cancelling its ultra-low-power Atom line of processors. Specifically, the company is cancelling its upcoming  Broxton platform  and the already-delayed SoFIA fully-integrated mobile chipset. Citing a company’s spokesperson, the publication of PCWorld reports :

Intel’s mobile chip roadmap now has a giant hole after the cancellation of the chips. Intel’s existing smartphone and tablet-only chips are aging and due for upgrades, and no major replacements are in sight. Sofia is already shipping, and Broxton was due to ship this year but had been delayed. Intel is also discontinuing its Atom X5 line of tablet chips code-named Cherry Trail, which is being replaced by Pentium and Celeron chips code-named Apollo Lake, aimed more at hybrids than pure tablets. Many PC makers are already choosing Intel’s Skylake Core M processors over Cherry Trail for hybrids and PC-like tablets.

The announcement comes days after its CEO outlined the company’s future plan. Additionally, Intel doesn’t want this framed as them quitting the mobile SoC game, but rather just taking a time out.

Intel Launches New Moorefield Mobile Processor

Amidst all the hype for the new Skylake processors, Intel quietly slips its new flagship processor, the Intel Atom Z3590, which is geared for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Intel Atom Z3590 shares a lot in common with its predecessor, the Z3580. Both mobile processors are based on the same manufacturing process (22nm), and the same set of feature set which include support for up to 4GB of RAM, AES encryption, Smart Idle, SpeedStep and Intel Virtualization.

The Z3590 also sports the same quartet of processors based on Silvermont microarchitecture, and the same PowerVR G6430 graphics processing unit. The difference on the new model, however, is that it receives a 7% boost in burst clock speed rated at 2.5GHz, and a notable improvement on the burst frequency on its on-board GPU which tops out at 640MHz.

The new Intel Atom Z3590 has already made its way on some of the devices that were launched at IFA 2015 which include Asus ZenFone Zoom.

In line with the announcement of the new Broadwell-U line up, Intel also took the wraps off the new Intel Atom codenamed Cherry Trail.

Intel Cherry Trail

Unfortunately, unlike with the new Broadwell-U family, there were not a lot of details about Cherry Trail that were mentioned during the announcement.

The chipmaker did, however, state that the Bay Trail’s successor will play nicely with their XMM726x wireless module which means that upcoming Intel-powered smartphones/tablets will support LTE-Advance connectivity out of the box, like the newly-announced Lenovo P90.

On top of that, Intel also mentioned that their new system-on-chip will be imbued with new technologies such as Intel Context Aware, RealSense and Integrated Sensor Solution.

Intel is anticipating that Cherry Trail-powered devices will start to hit the shelves on the first half of 2015.
