Samsung to produce Qualcomm Snapdragon 820

Samsung has just announced that it’s begun mass production of SoCs using the latest 2nd generation 14nm FinFET process technology.

This new technology will be used with its Sammy’s own and Exynos 8 Octa processor and the upcoming Snapdragon 820 from their major competitor — Qualcomm. This means that the upcoming high-end chip from Qualcomm will use Samsung’s new 14nm LPP process which “delivers up to 15 percent higher speed and 15 percent less power consumption over the previous 14nm LPE process through improvements in transistor structure and process optimization.”

We can expect to see the Snapdragon 820 in multiple flagship devices for 2016, including the Samsung Galaxy S7. Although, Samsung might still go with their own Exynos chipset. We just have to wait and see the official announcement soon.

Samsung introduces Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processor

Samsung Electronics has just announced its newest home-baked silicon and a successor to the previous Exynos 7 Octa 7420 which powers Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, and Note 5.

Exynos8

The Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890 is built on 14nm FinFET process technology and is a complete package combining the processor and the modem in one. It features the company’s first custom designed CPU based on 64-bit ARMv8 architecture and LTE Rel.12 Cat.12/13 modem. There’s also ARM Mali-T880 to handle graphics performance.

The chipset can provide 30% improvement in performance and 10% more power efficient over its predecessor. It also supports enhanced heterogeneous multi-processing using the four custom and four Cortex-A53 cores. With the advanced LTE modem inside, it can take a maximum download speed of 600Mbps and upload speed of 150Mbps with carrier aggregation.

Samsung’s latest chipset will begin mass production in late 2015. We can expect it to power the upcoming 2016 Galaxy devices.

5 of the Most Powerful Mobile processors of 2014

Mobile processors in phones this year have surpassed the computing powers of a lot of computers from a decade ago. Here are the top 5 fastest smartphone processors available in the market for 2014.

Huawei Kirin 925. The Kirin 925 is the latest and fastest chip developed by the Chinese company. It uses a 28nm HPM process and runs a pair of quad-core chips — 4x Cortex-A15 + 4 x Cortex-A7 big.LITTLE.

The GPU is powered by a Mali-T628 MP4 running at 600MHz.

What is most interesting with the Kirin 925 is that it is capable of supporting dual-SIM functionality with both dual-LTE radios.

Mediatek MT6795. Not to be outdone, MediaTek finally released its octa-core chip with LTE connectivity. The MT6795 is clocked at 2.2GHz, all 8 cores of them based on ARM Cortex-A53.

MT6795

Graphics is powered by a PowerVR G6200 @ 700 MHz that can handle up to 2560×1600-pixel display.

We have not yet seen any recognizable phone brands that uses the MT6795 but we’ve seen some leads from Chinese online stores of close phones (Galaxy Note 4) running the chip.

NVidia Tegra K1. Released around the 2nd quarter of 2014, the Tegra K1 uses a 28nm HPM process and runs on ARM Cortex-A15 MPCore R3 plus a low power companion core. Each of the 4 cores clocks up to 2.3GHz.

The GPU uses GK20A Kepler micro-architecture with capacity of 364.79 GFLOPS (with core configuration of 192:8:4). That is a lot of cores!

However, very few devices are using it — including the NVidia Shield Tablet and the XiaoMi MiPad.

Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5433. This chip uses a 20 nm HKMG process running a quad-core Cortex-A57+ quad-core Cortex-A53 (big.LITTLE with GTS) implementation. The GPU is powered by a Mali-T760 MP6 @ 700 MHz with 206 GFLOPS (FP16).

Exynos 5 Octa

The chip is developed by Samsung and being used in the Galaxy Note 4. However, it’s possible that might offer the same to other friendly brands.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805. Perhaps the most popular among the mobile chipsets right now is the Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. It is being used by the most number of phone brands.

Snapdragon 805

The Snapdragon 805 is based on 28nm HPm process and runs on a quad-core processor with each core running at 2.7GHz. Graphics is powered by an Adreno 420 GPU.

Samsung’s first 20nm Exynos Octa-Core processor

The new SoC that powers the latest metal-clad Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a Samsung Exynos 5430 Octa SoC, the first SoC coming from Samsung’s 20nm HKMG process. What is its difference from the 28nm HKMG process? Read on to find out.

To start, it is an octa-core big.LITTLE processor design with four 1.8Ghz Cortex A15 and four 1.3Ghz Cortex A7 CPU, with a Mali T628MP6 GPU. This has been done before with its predecessor, the Exynos 5420 SoC. The improvement is in the manufacturing process, as mentioned, from 28nm to 20nm.

According to AnandTech, here are a few of the critical changes:

• Instead of a gate-first approach for the high-k metal gate formation, the gate is now the last part of the transistor to be formed. This improves performance because the characteristics of the gate are no longer affected by significant high/low temperatures during manufacturing.

• The lower-k dielectric in the interconnect layers reduce capacitance between the metal and therefore increase maximum clock speed/performance and reduce power consumption.

• Improved silicon straining techniques should also improve drive current in the transistors, which can drive higher performance and lower power consumption.

For users, this means a more powerful processor with longer battery life. We expect to see this SoC powering future Samsung devices and other OEMs. For now, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha gets the first dibs.
