AT&T fined $25M for fraud and privacy breach in Philippine call center

It’s been reported that call centers in Philippines as well as those located in Columbia and Mexico are on AT&T’s watch list due to data breach that affects almost 280,000 US customers.

The $25M settlement with AT&T Services was to “resolve an investigation into consumer privacy violations at AT&T’s call centers located in the said countries.” This has been by far the largest privacy and data security enforcement action made by FCC or Federal Communications Commission.

Call Center Focus also reports that the fine has already been implemented in other call center companies. Additionally, sources say Teleperformance in Mexico is the company where three suspect employees came from.

Here in the Philippines, however, the local authorities have not yet made any form of investigation since the president “has yet to make a National Privacy Commission that would regulate the data privacy policies under the law.

Because of the issue, other AT&T accounts have already been pulled out from call center firms. Other employees who still have the account are also in fear of losing their jobs once the company’s contract expires.

NailO lets you use your thumbnail as a mini trackpad

As technology grows, gadgets these days get smaller and smaller and what we have here is quite a testament. What the researchers from MIT are developing is a miniature device that transforms your thumbnail into a trackpad — meet the NailO.

MIT-Thumbnail-Trackpad

NailO basically helps its user accomplish simple tasks on the go. If, for example, you’re following a cooking recipe and your hands are full, you can use NailO to help scroll the page. Another example is you can also use it to send short messages while in a meeting.

As functional as it may seem, the makers behind it also mixed a sense of fashion into the device. They’re planning to also offer interchangeable outer covering with different colors to match the overall theme of the user — kind of like those colorful stickers women use to decorate their nails.

This prototype will be presented next week at the Association for Computing Machinery’s Computet-Human interaction conference in Seoul, South Korea.

Check out their video showing NailO used on smartphones.

OnePlus Two launching on April 20th?

OnePlus announced on their Google Plus account that they will be holding an event this coming April 20. There are no hints attached with the invitation as to what will be introduced, but could it be the product launch of their next flagship — the OnePlus Two?

Other than the date, only a photo caption was teased that reads, “From here on out, anything could happen.” Now, the company itself confirmed that there will be a new flagship on the way, replacing the current OnePlus One. Carl Pei, the company’s co-founder also promised that the new phone “would be a surprise and would impress many techies all around the world.” As for the rumored specs, the OnePlus Two could feature QHD display resolution on a 5.5-inch screen along with 4GB RAM and Android Lollipop out of the box.

But, as the they themselves said, anything could happen so there’s also a chance of releasing a totally new product. It’s a bit hard to guess what it’s going to be since the company has released a number of different gadgets like a power bank, earphones and even a drone.

The launch is just in two days and until then, stay tuned as we’ll be sure to update you once things get official.
