goTenna, lets you send messages even when there’s no cell service

For those times when your cell service provider is not working or when you’re in an area where there’s no coverage, a device called the goTenna keeps you connected by letting you send messages to other goTenna users for free, even if you don’t have a signal or working internet connection.

goTenna is a Bluetooth-LE-equipped device that pairs with your smartphone (range of up to 20 feet) and, with the help of an app, lets you send messages or share your GPS coordinates to other goTenna-equipped smartphones for free. It uses low-frequency radio waves to transmit messages so it doesn’t rely on cell towers, WiFi, or working Internet connection. It works even if your smartphone is in Airplane mode.
