Three Services to Help You Back Up Your Data

If you’re like many and have had to go through a plethora of reformatting processes (mainly the case for Windows users), then you might be interested in three different services to help you back up your data in numeruous ways.

1. MozyHome

Mozy, one of the leading companies in online and remote storage/backup offers an excellent free service to those who are interested in backing up their important computer files to Mozy’s servers. What is most interesting about this service is that they provide you 2GB of storage to begin with, and for every 4 friends you refer to the service, you will gain an additional gigabyte for FREE! To me, that sounds like a more than generous deal and even if you don’t refer friends, 2GB of storage is enough for many of your important documents and pictures, along with some important music files you don’t think you could find anywhere else.

To get started with MozyHome, you must first visit the company’s site at this address. After you have registered and confirmed your email, you would need to download the software and install it on your computer. After the install is finished, just follow the step-by-step instructions to set up your own backup tool on your computer. Additionally, you could also schedule a certain time period to backup your files using the software, a great option for those with idle computer times that can be used to backup their files. Furthermore, Mozy creates a virtual drive on your computer (for Windows users only) that you can easily access to view and restore your lost files.

Now even though Mozy is a great backup service, it has one main drawback that I’d like to address. When using Mozy to restore your files, it could take an exorbitant amount of time especially if the size of the file is very large, say around 700 mb. Of course you could also purchase a CD of your files to restore them, but imagine you had an important file you had to attain today that you accidentally deleted yesterday, it would take days for the company to ship you the CD before you could even do anything. Therefore, if you are to use Mozy, be aware that it is not the best for backing up large files.

2. File Savr

The next service, File Savr, is not necessarily a backup tool, but it can be used to store large files, such as movies, images, or a music collection – to be downloaded later when truly needed. File Savr is a free file hosting service where you can upload files up to the size of 10GB. One of the many perks of File Savr is that unlike other free file hosting services like RapidShare or Megaupload, there are no counters to wait on nor overload of ads to the site.

Also, for the next four days, File Savr is giving away Gold Plan accounts for FREE! (I seem to have used that word a lot so far.) Their Gold Plan allows members to store their files online at a cap of 250 GB, which is rather a larger number seeing as how normal USB Storage devices of that caliber would cost around $100-200. Furthermore, it allows members to direct link images and share files with their friends and families.

3. Dropbox

Today, a service called Dropbox came out of Beta and began to offer a free secure backup, syncing, and file sharing service. What Dropbox actually does, is that it links your computer to several computers that you own and the Dropbox server to create easy file syncing to access your files from a remote location. Therefore, if you had two computers, one at home and one at work, you could backup your data from work to your home computer using Dropbox’s easy interface to sync your files between computers.

To use Dropbox, like Mozy, you would have to register for the service at its main site here. You then download the software they provide and install it on your computer(s). Next, you will have to link your computer to the Dropbox server using the software’s interface. After that, just copy and paste files or folders to the Dropbox icon located in your My Computers for Windows or hard drive’s window for Mac and Linux. Something interesting about Dropbox is that it also syncs across operating systems like Windows and Mac or Linux, providing you with an easy interface to backup your files and share with friends.

Busy Bee

Boomer, our new doggyFirst off, we’ve got a new dog. Like I’ve been telling everyone yesterday, the house is starting to look more like a zoo than an actual house. Sigh, sigh. Guys, meet Boomer. He’s an 8-month-old male Shih Tzu being sold to us for the past couple of days. He’s adorably sweet, and he loves hoarding all the nice air from the electric fan. Boo! He badly needs to be groomed, and soon. He looks like a complete mess.

The blogger registration for The 2008 Philippine Blog Awards is now open. I’ve met up with the organizers and a couple of fellow volunteers yesterday at Cubao, and everything’s being polished as the event day draws near.

After the meeting, my mother and I went to the Manila International Book Fair. My mom’s a big fan of back issues of magazines, and though she managed to spend a lot on them, she still left the place feeling disappointed. She reckoned the book fair last year was a lot better than this year’s, but I told her that we’d have to wait until the last day when the exhibitors dropped the price more. However, I secretly agreed with her.

Here’s my loot for the second day:

I got them both from the 99PHP bin in National Bookstore. Not bad, eh? Although it took about an hour to pay for them as the queue was incredibly long.

After ten pounds of magazines from Summit Media, my mother bought books from PSICOM Publishing — her beloved True Philippine Ghost Stories and a couple word puzzle books for my grandmother. I directed her to the ABS-CBN Publishing stall to buy a few more magazines.

I got to meet fellow moochers from BookMooch (tell me if you’ve joined, or want to) when I joined in the book discussion about The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Well, that might be stretching the truth a little. I didn’t exactly talk because I had no idea what they were talking about. I was able to read only a few chapters of the book — I was always sidetracked by one thing or another — and the amount of spoilers I heard was overwhelming, heh. I also took the eight Nancy Drew books I mooched from one member. Yay!

All in all, yesterday was a good, albeit tiring, day. I slept like a log.

2008 Manila Christmas Bazaar Schedule

What a wonderful award and world

Its 12:47 a.m., I don’t think Unconscious Mutterings will be in my inbox anytime soon. It usually sent to my inbox 20 minutes after 12, I’m kind of missing it tonight or today…Whatever.

I was supposed to post it together with the two wonderful things I received yesterday.

I still cannot stop myself from checking my inbox, it’s getting addictive I guess. The tension of waiting is running down my spine, and I am getting over-acting now.

Anyway, I better share you this two stuff I received yesterday and I was overwhelmed about it.

First I saw this video. No, first Mr. Durano Lawayan gave me this wonderful award, actually it’s not the award that is wonderful. It is the great review that he gave to this blog, I had a goose bump when I read it (eeewww! I am over acting again lol!)

Here what his review goes:

Manilenya - This blog mirrors the aspirations of many Filipinos who seek a better life and a better future for their families abroad, removed physically from their loved ones. Manilenya’s struggle with the guilt of being away from her young child finds solace in connecting with many other Filipinos in like situations as well as finding new friends based in Manila who offer encouragement and moral support. Her posts are at times witty, sometimes funny with lots of self-deprecating humor, yet always poignant and hopeful. Her intelligence and capabilities come to the fore despite the perceived limitations she has of herself, which she doesn’t realize she has already transcended. She epitomizes this robust and pliable race whose humor is its best coping mechanism. It makes Filipinos proud to belong to this race.

Thanks for this award Mr. Durano Lawayan but I am so sorry that I cannot pass this award to someone else’s blog. Although there’s a lot of blogs I like, I am not as gregarious (naks! new word to me) as you. I can’t use the adequate words to express what I think about on these bloggers, I’ll just hug them when I see them.

But I can give this award back to you, because, well it’s an open secret that I like you very much. I like your blog and the best thing that I like is the spit….you spit the richest words that compliments every bloggers that you visits.

Whew!

Oh, this one I also like…..enjoy watching this video, it gives hope and….hope.

I see trees of green…….. red roses too

And I think to myself…. what a wonderful world.
