Cruising over Boracay Island

Photo was actually last June 2 while I was on my flight back to Manila. I was already on the state of drowsiness (read: lack of sleep). The airline pilot just suddently tilted the plane to its left. I was seated on the Alpha seat, so I got really elated what I found from my window: Boracay Island!

Then my seemingly eternal need to hit the beach haunted me again. The clear blue water of Boracay Island Philippines is just sop tempting. The four-kilometer white sand on the world-famous Boracay White Beach is clearly visible from the aircraft.

It was only last January when I was able to visit Boracay again. During that time most of the tourists flocking to the island are foreigners. Most of them are staying away for the harsh winter climate in their home country.

But facts has to be told: the Boracay many people dreaming of visiting today is not the very Boracay we had many years ago. During the 80’s and until the 90’s Boracay Island Resort is what many people call a Paradise. A place that is so clean and the waters pristine.

Today, throngs of crowd go to Boracay every summer time as if it’s a pilgrim site. And because of the heavy inflow of tourist arrivals, it is also expected that the volume of garbage also increases. Worse some of these are just left right in beach. You get to spot some cigarette butts, bottle caps, barbecue skewers just left in the sand. Seaweeds (lumot) oftentimes appear at the beach during summer time. The very time when hordes of people are in this island.

And the unabated construction spree occurring at the other side of the island. Sometimes I would think that one day the island would just sink with all the large constructions being undertaken, the volume of the people coming in and out every day, and the garbage problem in the area.

I hope we can still maintain Boracay. At the very least maintain, or better if we can improve its present pathetic condition.

Minor charges vs Miranda et al dismissed

Applause and jubilation erupted when law member Marian Aleido declared: “Wherefore the motions of the accused are hereby granted and the questioned charges are dismissed.”

With that, the charges of conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman, disrespect to the president, conduct prejudicial to public service etc. against the 28 officers accused of planning to withdraw support from Gloria Arroyo was dismissed.

What remains is the charge of mutiny, which in the pre-trial investigation report was recommended to be dismissed for “lack of factual and legal basis.”

“This is the restoration of sanity in an insane situation,” atty. Homobono Adaza, lawyer of Col. Ariel Querubin enthused.

Atty. Alex Lacson, lawyer of Col. Custodio Parcon, “This is a reflection of the changing characteristic of the military under the new chief of staff.”

More later.

PS: Because I’ve such a sick sense of humor, humor me and — if you’re a Firefox user — type about:robots on your browser. Funny, eh? No? Oh, well. I warned you about my sense of humor. ^_^ Meanwhile, I’ve been tweaking my Firefox installation, and I think I’m getting used to the *awesome* address bar now, and almost immediately after complaning about it too.
