Sony confirms working on porting more PS2 games to PS4

There recently was a new game released which included PS2 titles that all ran on a PS4 using an emulator. In light of this, Sony also confirms that they are working on bringing more PS2 games to the current console.

The topic of backward compatibility regained traction once more as a new PS4 game (Special Edition Star Wars Battlefront) included PSN codes to download additional titles. These include:

Super Star Wars
Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
Star Wars: Racer Revenge
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter

From those, three of which are titles from the classic PS2 console and were reported to be up and running using what they can deduce as an emulator (you can read how they came to this conclusion and more about the picture quality at Eurogamer.net).

On a related note, Techradar shot a question to Sony regarding the existence of the said emulator and received a confirmation from a representative:

“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

This simply means that backward compatibility for the PS4 is officially possible. For now, we’ll just have to wait for the announcement of which games will be ported over — could be a lot considering the vast library of PS2 games released.

New PS4 CUH-1200 now available in DataBlitz

The newest model of the popular gaming console is now on sale in PH through DataBlitz.

The updated CUH-1200 version of PlayStation 4 has minor changes from its previous model. Specifically:

  • New mechanical buttons
  • Weighs 10% less (2.5kg vs 2.8kg)
  • Consumes 8% less power (230W vs 250W)
  • 6db quieter

Perhaps the biggest difference is the mechanical eject and power button. Old models of the console have capacitive buttons which is prone to accidental touches (from personal experience, it’s very frustrating to eject the disc while playing). Also, the new model has full matte finish unlike the combination of glossy and matte cover.

The new PS4 has an SRP of Php 17,495 and comes in either black or white color.

Microsoft announces backward compatibility for the Xbox One

During the E3 event, Microsoft announces that its Xbox One gaming console will be able to play old Xbox 360 games. The thing is, not all games will be recognized — at least for its initial launch.

Business Insider reports that the old Xbox 360 discs will be read by the new Xbox One. In addition, Microsoft will be releasing digital copies of old titles that gamers can opt to download. If that may seem too good to be true, that’s because it is. The company added that only 100 titles from the previous console will be available to be played during the rollout of the feature. If there will be more games after that, is still unclear.

One notable thing they mentioned was that among those, Mass Effect will be included so it’s not at all bad.

In contrast, Sony has PlayStation Now service which doesn’t also recognize all previous game, but it’s a bit pricey too since you have to pay every month regardless if you have or haven’t played the game already. So in a way, Microsoft’s backward compatibility gives the Xbox One more edge than PS4 in this sense.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer mentions, “We won’t charge you for the games you already own.”
