Intel ships first LTE modem for smartphones and tablets

Intel has already started shipping to device manufacturers their first LTE modem chip that also supports 3G and 2G networks.

To clear things up, this new chip is not Intel’s first LTE modem. As GigaOM writes, the first one was released last year but works on 4G networks only. However, this Intel XMM7160 chip not only supports 15 global LTE bands but also 5-band HSPA+ and 4-band EDGE.

Below are the key features of the Intel XMM7160:
• 4-band EDGE
• 5-band HSPA+
• Multi-band LTE
• 42 Mbps DC-HSPA
• 150 Mbps CAT 4 LTE
• EDGE MSC33
• CPC DRX/DTX
• Antenna diversity
• Multimode platform
• Intel X-GOLD™ 716 baseband
• Choice of Intel SMARTi™ 4G transceiver or Intel SMARTi™ m4G integrated transceiver and front end module
• Intel Comneon Release 9 protocol stack
• VoLTE (Voice-over-LTE)
• SON/ANR
• Very small footprint
• Low power consumption
• Pre-certified

Qualcomm is currently the leading supplier of LTE-capable chips for smartphones and tablets. With the XMM7160, Intel is hoping that it will put them back in the game.
