Goodbye, Torrentz.eu

Torrentz.eu has been shut down by UK anti-piracy police in order to lessen illegal file sharing. The site is reported to be the largest search engine for torrents and it was just taken down morning of May 26, 2014.

The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit of UK made a request to the registrar of the site’s domain to suspend the file sharing website. Prior to this, authorities have been sending out warning letters to Torrentz.eu. Although being the largest torrent site on the Internet, we can just imagine that this isn’t the first time they have received such notice making them ignore the appeal from the police.

Last week, yet another set of appeals were sent and this time it resulted to the termination of the site. Their alternate domains (Torrentz.me and Torrentz.ch), however, are still functional but might be next in line.

Torrentz.eu isn’t the only one affected by this. A number of sites with similar services were also stripped of their place off the Internet. isoHunt and The Pirate Bay share this experience as they are also shut down completely or have been blocked in other countries.

Here in the Philippines, the government has also been trying to diminish illegal downloading. Just last year, they shut down torrent site KAT.ph (formerly kickasstorrents.com) which is a source for pirated movies, music, software, and games. They can’t blame us, though, we Filipinos love our torrents for getting free stuff. We even ranked top 10 in BitTorrent downloads a few years back.
