A smart contact lens for diabetes by Google X

Google X, the secret facility division of Google that is behind the Google Loon, the self-driving car and the now-released Google Glass, is now working on a new announced project.

People with diabetes is the big beneficiary of the new project Google X is working on. A contact lens that can read glucose levels with the use of tears. The said smart contact lens is made up of a tiny wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor. The two are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material.

Early prototypes is said to perform a reading once per second. Aside from these, tiny LED lights could be integrated to serve as a early warning mechanism if sugar levels are too high or too low.

Google will be partnering will experts to make the smart contact lens available to consumers. A dedicated app shall also be developed for user and doctor readings.
