Apartelle de Andrea/ Viajera Dine and Cafe Koronadal

VIAJERA CAFÉ and RESTAURANT / APARTELLE de Andrea

Fresh from our Zipline activity in Lake Sebu, we headed straight to Koronadal City. Since it is my first time to spend a night in the capital of South Cotabato, I really had no idead where to go. So I didn’t expect anything at all.

IMG_20150717_205724

Later, we found ourselves checking in at Apartel de Andrea, a relatively new hotel facility in Koronadal. Upon arrival we were greeted with the sweet – sounding “Maayong Gab-i”. a greeting in the Hiligaynon language. For once, I immediately felt at home. Being a Hiligaynon speaker myself i find it comfortable to communicate with the Hotel staff, (Later i discovered that their F&B manager is also a Bacoleño)

Apartel de Andrea opened only this year. The room is complete with the basic stuff you need in a hotel room. Cool A/C cable TV flat Screen TV unit good WiFi connection hot and cold shower. Comfy bed and pillows. Although it is located beside the highway the noise of the passing vehicles are barely noticeable.

It was past 9PM when i felt the hunger pangs starting to make its presence felt. So I decided to visit the Viajera Restaurant. Viajera was the first to open. Later they only added the rooms for the Apartel. Viajera restaurant is actually an old house converted into a dining place. The second floor has a T’boli themed area complete with all the Tboli garments accessories and other stuff.

I decided to have coffee just before calling it a night. I checked the menu. After scouring the items off the menu I ended up ordering Ginger Lemon Tea Pumpkin soup and crispy fried noodles.

What was supposed to be just a cup of coffee ended up in a feast!

The crispy noodles is good. The veggies were freshly cooked. Poured hot over the noodles. Its not greasy, nor too salty. It has lots of veggies too. I asked the wait staff and he told me that all of the veggies are locally sourced and the shrimps either from the nearby GenSan or Davao.

He knows what he is talking about. And i Love it to bits!

Our accommodation already has a complimentary breakfast. I opted for the traditional daing na bangus, fried rice and sunny side up, cooked malasado-style. I always love to pour the yolk over my rice.

And to complete the whole breakfast ensemble i had brewed native coffee harvested from the Highlands of Polomolok.

Ahhh I was surprised. “may kape din pala sa Polomolok! Akala ko pinya lang meron dun”
At first I thought their coffee came from Sultan Kudarat. A nearby provides known as thr Philippines’ top producer of coffee beans.
Forget Batangas. Forget Alfonso Cavite. The real deal is in Sultan Kudarat!

IMG_20150718_050817

People close to me would know how much struggle I make just to make the no-rice diet work.

But with a perfectly marinated daing na bangus with sunny side up and the tempting aroma of Polomolok coffee, who am I to say no ro rice? Haha

And just before check out of the hotel, I had my lunch at Viajera. After a food experience with them during breakfast, more or less I already know what to expect. The bar has been set so high. For lunch I ordered the lengua and a concoction of lemongrass and passion fruit juice.

Again, they really know how to tickle my senses. The lemongrass /passion fruit juice is so good! It must have been a perfect summer cooler or hotel welcome drink! Very refreshing. Its not too sweet.

The lengua is a manna from heaven. To say that it is perfectly cooked is truly an understatement. The ox tongue is slow cooked under cotton-y soft and tender. The sauce is not very oily. Hindi nakakaumay.

Most foods I ordered (except for pumpkin soup) is already good for sharing. The lengua is good for 2-3pax. But guess what i almost finished them all!

All in all Viajera Dine and Cafe is a highly – recommended must try resto in Koronadal!

Postscript : I hope they would also place rubber mat on the floor tiles as it gets very very slippery when wet. In fact i accidentally slid off the floor and hit my head on the wall. Good thing it’s not serious.

Unlocking the culinary secrets of the Southern Tagalog Region.

Part 1

I have always been wanting to go on a culinary journey somewhere in the southern Luzon. Until recently I received an invitation from the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) to embark on a culinary adventure in the provinces of Laguna, Quezon and Batangas.

At first I was hesitant to join the trip as i have conflicting schedules. Until I finally I confirmed to reserve my slot.

I was. More than excited!

April 27 i left home pretty early and headed to Manila Intercon Hotel to meet the other media joining the tour. Because of the Aliwan Fiesta i only joined thr second leg of the tour.

Just before sunrise we were already at the SLEX heading towards San Pablo City. This partof Laguna is also known for irs moniker as the City of seven lakes. And our first destination is the famed Lame Sampaloc where we got our passports stamped. After which we proceeded to Casa San Pablo for our breakfast.. To start our day right we had the seven lakes breakfast. Its actually a breakfast consisting of seven dish where its main ingredients are sourced from the lakes of san Pablo.

We had Si igang na ayungin, Pinaete (bagoong), Dried biya from laguna de bay, Itlog na maalat from the nearby town of Victoria, Longganisa ng san pablo, Tsokolate at pinipig, and Pantapik (side dishes) dishes were served either with rice or pan de sal. I got to try the pina ete and it actually tastes a little bit similar to the Ilonggo shrimp paste locally k own as Guinamos except that the pinaete has creamy hints since it uses coconut milk for added flavor. The dried biya is really good it has the cru ch similar to danggit of Cebu and lightly marinated to highlight its flavor.

We capped our breakfast with a piping hot tablea chocolate topped with pinipig. The pinipig adds more texture to the chocolate drink and is a perfect beverage in the morning.

And the eating simply doesn’t end there. We still have a lot to sample!
After breakfast we listened to a short talk about coconuts how it became so popular in southern Tagalog and how it once powered the economy. From there we were also introduced to various drinks and desserts coconut has to offer from its flowerbud stage (tubá) until the desicated coconut stage mainly used for macaroons. I tell you, theres a lot of foods in between!

From San Pablo our next caravan destination is the town of Nagcarlan. And our first stop in this part of Laguna is the famed Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery. Beautiful as ever. The last time i was in agcarlan was sometime in 2006 when I did the Laguna Loop tour. I am quite fascinated at its ornate gates and the mortuary chapel has a lot of history too. From the underground Cemetery we walked to the municipal hall where we were met by the mayor and town officials.

PICT_20150427_092112

At the Nagcarlan Municipal Hall we got to experience howto cook the local dish known as Menudong Gulay. It’s actually is similar to vegetable curry. We also sampled the popular Nagcarlan kakanin called Espasol.

From Nagcarlan we then traveled further to the town of Liliw. Known to be the tsinelas or slippers capita of Laguna Liliw is home to some of the most durable and really affordable footwear. More than justthe footwear we also got to visitone of the most beautiful brick churches in Laguna and sample its delights too! For this caravan we got to sample the uraro cookies. Its actually one of my favorite cookies. Its lightly sweetened and the texture is very fine.

IMG_20150427_112304

From Liliw we moved to the next town of Majayjay. Our first stop was at the chuch where we were welcomed by some kids in a dance number. We lso had our passports stamped here.

From Majayjay church we traveled to Costales Farm for our organic lunch. We also got to tour around the facility where different varieties of herbs lettuce fishes and even swine are raised here.

While having lunch we were entertained by the community-based Lucban Community Rondalla Ensemble for a medley of classical music. The kids were once recognized as the champion of National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) it was indeed a grrat prude for Southern Tagalog Region to gave talented kids gather snd hone their skills in stringed instruments.

IMG_20150427_145842

From costales farm in Majayjay Laguna we then traveled to our last destination for the day:Lucban Quezon.

More than just the famed Pahiyas Festival, Lucban is also known for gstronomic delights like the longganisang Lucban Pancit habhab and the Hardinera.

Upon arrival we had our passports stamped at the church yard where we also got to observe how the kiping is made. Kiping is the colorful leaf-like component used in decorating the homes duri g the pahiyas is is usually of ground rice and food color. It is poured over a certain kind of leaf and steamed. It is then removed from the leaf and left to harden.

PICT_20150427_165533

After the kiping demo we also got to sample pancit habhba and thr famed lingganisang lucan. This sausage variety is actually more garlicmy and has lots of pepper on it.

It was just the first day of our southern tagalog kulinarya caravan and we have just started. We have already done so much. We still ha e two more days to explore the exquisite flavors of this region.

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!

Mornings with Sandok Comfort Food

It all started with one facebook ad. I read, got interested in and ultimately mornings has never been the same again.

Welcome to Sandok Comfort Food. A new restaurant located along 6th street Bacolod City That serves good old Ilonggo homecooked meals.

image_20141126115016508_1

The interiors are quite homey. With quotes from popular food writer Julia Child hanging on the wall. Ahh the placemat, too! Who wouldn’t dare noticce the lovely piece full of food quotes! I can just easily pretend I’m in a Julie and Julia movie.

The first time I went to Sandok I was so clueless of what to order. The menu written in blackboard adds more charm.

Finally i opted for bacon tapa with sunny side up. Tapa is a popular Filipino breakfast fare similar to beef jerky. Best when paired with fried or garlic rice.

image_1

Sandok’s version of tapa is so thin and dry, unloke Manila’s version which is cooke with some sau e on it. The tapa is somewhat Similar to bacon. Well marinated in salt pepper and spices and sun dried to achieve that perfect crunch.
It’s so good. It reminds me of my early childhood days when the smell of deep fried tapa is wafting through the air eveytime i wake up in the morning. I love it. Period.

And one good meal deserves another, right? So in the following days of my month long stay in bacolod i went back to Sandok for my breakfast fix. This time i ordered chunky corned beef and garlic rice.

Sun dried tapa

Sun dried tapa

This time I hit the jackpot. It was a eureka moment. Finally I found the best corned beef in Bacolod! Their corned beef is homemade and is oozing with all the juices. The level of saltiness is just right. So in the next few days i just had corned beef corned beef and more corned beef.

On my last day in Bacolod, just a few hours before I flewback to the Metro I went back to Sandok for lunch. I had Manok sa ubad soup with rice on the side. The servings are large the soup is good for two persons already.

Chunky corned beef

Sandok also serves other Ilonggo homecooked dishes like KBL (Kadios Baboy Langka), kansi and dinuguan and to make the menu exciting they also offer menu of the week. When i wwnt there for lunch I was supposed to try their burger steak menu of the week. Unfortunately they ran out of gravy sauce. Awwww. Maybe next time

But for now you know where to find me when Im craving for good homecooked meals. Sandok is located along 6th street. In front of sophia’s bakery and City Lunch. They are open 7am-8pm and closed on Sundays.

Pancake House: new look same great comfort food!

I am not a big fan of pancakes. But i recently discovered my secret love affair with banana walnut pancakes, drizzled with yummy pancake syrup. And that love affair started at the pancake house.

So when i got an invitation for a media fam tour in Pancake House in Lipa Batangas I immediately said yes.

IMG_20141117_130753

And during the tour I got to sample other dihes which has piqued my interest among them are the spaghetti and their version of tacos. Their spaghetti is so meaty and comes in a large serving too!

For lunch i ordered hamburger steak with spaghetti on the side. Its so good. The burger patty is pretty thick. And is made of pure beefy goodness. Cooked to perfection and smothered with savory mushroom gravy. Yummy!

Pancake House Lipa is the first ever store to be built from scratch under the new Max’s Group of Company.

New look new logo but the same good old comfort food we have always known for.

Pancake House’s revamped theme involves all elements of the store—from broad strokes to fine details. The brand’s famous orange color, which was previously integrated into every nook and cranny of the restaurant, was even given an overhaul.

IMG_20141117_133557

The logo, on the other hand, now shows a new interpretation of the restaurant’s famed house symbol. Tying it to the concept of home and comfort is the glow from the house cascading to the old orange background. Of course, the brand’s complementing colors—fuchsia, brown, and blue—are also integrated to the new design scheme.
