The Apple iPad may just be a portable computing device for most of us, but in the hands of a gifted artist like Kyle Lambert, it can be a medium to make stunning and near-identical portraits using only fingers and a drawing app.

If you look closely at the image above, you’d think that the picture was shot by a professional portrait photographer inside a studio. And while that’s partly true, the picture you’re looking at is actually a hand-made replica of the original image that was shot by Scott Gries.

Here’s a short time lapse of how the UK-based oil-painter and illustrator did Morgan Freeman’s portrait using his iPad and Procreate app:

The self-proclaimed “World’s most realistic finger-painting” artist has had numerous projects in the past (which you can view on his YouTube page and website) but his latest one (the Morgan Freeman portrait) is by far the best we’ve seen thus far. Hat’s off to Kyle Lambert for his amazing work and for reminding us that there’s more to our tablets than playing Candy Crush and leeching off of malls’ free Wi-Fi hotspots.
