Security issue found on Exynos-based devices

A security issue which allows malicious applications gain complete access to a device’s RAM has been found on Android devices carrying Samsung’s Exynos 4210 or 4412 processors.

XDA member, “alephzain”, who found the vulnerability, explained that the exploit can be used by an app to gain root access to physical memory as well as the system’s kernel. This lets the malicious app access important data or use the device’s camera-related functions. Devices affected are the Samsung Galaxy SII, Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Note 10.1, as well as devices from other manufacturers such as MeiZu and Lenovo.

The good news is another XDA member, “Chainfire”, has released an APK called ExynosAbuse, that will root an Exynos-based device and patch the vulnerability. The only downside is the root could void your device’s warranty. Let’s hope that Samsung rolls out an official update soon to fix this issue.
