Samsung announces new Exynos 5 Octa and Hexa chipsets

Samsung Electronics has annouced its two new Exynos processors for mobile devices, the Exynos 5 Octa (Exynos 5422) and the Exynos 5 Hexa (Exynos 5260).

The Exynos 5422 is Samsung’s advanced Exynos 5 Octa product for its premium mobile devices. It is equipped with eight cores; four big cores (ARM Cortex – A15 up to 2.1 GHz) for heavy loads and four small cores (ARM Cortex – A7 up to 1.5 GHz) for lighter jobs. The new processor promises to deliver up to 34% higher performance compared to previous Exynos Octa models and can save power consumption by up to 10%.

In addition, the Exynos 5422 supports high-resolution displays such as WQHD (2560 x 1440) and WQXGA (2560 x 1600) and utilizes advanced Multi Format Codec (MFC) that supports 4K UHD resolution.

Next is the Exynos 5260, which is powering the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo, is equipped with six CPU cores; two 1.7GHz ARM Cortex -A15 cores and four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex -A7 cores. It promises up to 42% improved performance compared to previous Exynos 5 Dual products. Like its octa-core brother, the Hexa supports high-resolution displays and 1080p playback at 60fps.

The Exynos 5422 Octa will enter mass production in the first quarter of 2014, while the Exynos 5260 Hexa is already in production.
